I'd rather take the pay cut in the game and free up some more wage budget

My current save I am on a £3000 a week contract where my wage budget is only £6500 a week

Doesn't work that way for two reasons:

Firstly, the wage budget/manager wage tradeoff doesn't work properly (IMO);

And, more importantly, the pursuit of realism means you would normally take the best wage on offer...
