I've just checked my U23s and found out a player who will bring me pain in following years

FM lists him as versatile player. He is natural at DR, DC, DM, WBR and MR, accomplished at DL and WBL, competent at ML, MC, AML, AMC and AMR and akward at ST.

How long will it be until I find his best position?

To save all the confusion I think I'd sell him

Most of my first team squad have at least a second listed position.

I currently have seven of my midfielders "accomplished" at FC/ST, meaning eleven forwards in the team.

Most of my defence is SW/DC/DM, and play well wherever I stick them.

I've got a DL/WBL/MLC at the moment who I started playing as a centre-mid but is likely to make the left back spot his own this season, although that's mostly because I can't find a decent left back who will sign for me!

I've also currently got a DRL/MRL who is a decent full back but doesn't really perform on the wings. My first choice ML is actually a right footed AMRLC/FC, who is quality wherever he plays, but only really gets a game on the wings.

I had a player who could play every position except DC (I even played him goal once, he got a 7 ), started at DR, then DL, the across the midfield, he did ok most of the time but didn't exactly set the world on fire. Then I played him as a lone striker due to injuries, and he started knocking them in for fun, over 20 goals/season for the next 4 years.

I started a new saved game just recently, after going on holiday from FM for a couple of months. I was stunned to find several highly versatile players at the club I selected. These players had multiple positions, but they also had other competencies in the positions areas of their profiles.

I have ended up with one of these players at ML and serving as the club captain. This was an easy choice, as he has excellent attributes. But I've got at least two or three other versatile players in my first team, and I've ended up with less versatile players on the bench. The versatile players are generally more talented, but there has been at least one case where an equally qualified player has been on the bench while a more versatile player has started many of my games.

The versatility and the use of versatile players in my first eleven has played perfectly into a tactical approach I wanted to use in this saved game. I decided to go with a formation that I've never used before, but the versatility allowed me to use that formation to start a match and then change it if I go up by a couple of goals or our defense struggles. I simply switch to a different saved formation, and the players easily cover the required positions. The versatility throughout the squad allows me to do this without making any substitutions, and that has been tremendously effective. It keeps the best players on the pitch and probably gives the opposition nightmares.

I also wanted continuity in this saved game, so I mostly kept my existing squad, but brought in a player that my scout recommended within the first month of the season. He's got to be the most versatile player I've ever seen in the game. He can play any left side or central position in defense, midfield, and even up front, and he's rated as accomplished at almost all of them. Nothing is rated as less than competent, and yet this player is barely into his 20's!

Originally I had planned on using him as a bench player, but I gave him some time in the first team right away, and I moved him around a bit, especially as I made my regular formation change mentioned above. He turned in some phenomenal performances, and I ended up using him in the first eleven. Unfortunately, he later suffered an injury that kept him out for three months, but he came back and was as good as ever.

At the risk of tipping, it makes sense to use your versatile players and give everyone a run in the first team to allow them to show what they can do. You might be surprised. We've all been through it at some point or another with FM. Someone is forced into the first eleven due to injuries and turns out to be oustanding.

Using your versatility might open you up to moving players around and making formation changes during a game, too. If players are tired, ineffective, or you want to give the opposition a different look to contend with, then you have the versatility to change things up with the players on the pitch and not just with substitutions.

Yep, exactly that, very useful in Wales.
