The DC/ST are the worst - I just can't distance my mind from instantly comparing them to the couple of rubbish real life players that have tried this in recent years.

The problem as I see it is that I may have been ignoring some excellent players because they were versatile.
Now I have found one that can actually play I'll be more careful in future.

Actually the same happens in "real life", specialists just have that 'extra bit' on their own position, while Mr Versality has a bit of everything (usually) and thus isn't as good on a specific position as the specialist.
I always have trouble finding the right position for versatile players as well. But since my squads usually aren't burdened with quality players () a decent versatile player will usually just end up where I don't have a better option.

I'll try and play my versatile players in their 'natural' position, as long as they are the best that I have got for that role in terms of their stats. Just because he can play anywhere doesn't mean he's any good anywhere
It does give you options for the bench as well but it depends on which league i'm playing in. Italian league with 7 subs gives you more options than in Denmark with 4

Managing in Denmark, I've actually got into the habit of re-training my players. With those, I tend to play them in their natural position if I can.
With the ones who are naturally versatile, I've found a decent set of bench-warmers. The 4 I usually have on the bench cover 16 positions between them.

What everyone else said. I like to have versatile players on the bench.
I also end up guilty when buying wingers and full backs in that given a choice between two similar players I'll always take the one who can play both sides whether I need the cover or not.
And D/SC is a horrible tag. Despite a certain ex-Norwich, Blackburn and Celtic player being rather good at it, I'll never ever buy one.

WHS. And when I need to sub anyone, I put on a sub for the position of Mr. Versatile, and move Mr Versatile somewhere else
