Playing in the Conference National acheiveing mid-table obscurity, my attendances slowly rose from about 1500 to 2800 by the time I topped the table in my sixth season.
The fans were delighted at the us lifting the title and I was thinking 'Woo Hoo, and extra 130K for TV rights in league two, plus the extra money from gate receipts. With this in mind I could finally afford to give my better players the new contracts that they deserved.
Played my six friendlies next season, winning 5 and losing 1. First game of the season is away. I lost 1-3.
Second game is home, and won 2-1 and the attendance.... 281 people.
I'm now 12 games in and the largest amount of people I've had is about 800, but the average is around 300 - 400. Also, my seasons ticket sales have slumped from 25K to just 6k.
A promotion usually means more money for a club. In this case it's going to bankrupt me. Has anyone else experienced this??
It's an idiosyncrasy that's been widely reported in here, I suppose it affects LLM more than higher league Clubs...because there's a huge difference falling from a 1000 attendance to a 500 whereas falling from 31000 to 30500 will hardly be a drop in the financial water.
It's certainly something I'd like to see fixed in FM2007.
I always found it realistic since it mirrors the behaviour in Germany perfectly. Lower leagues usually mean more games against rival clubs, lower ticket prices, it's easier to get to away games (shorter distance), and so on.
Paying 80 euro for a Bundesliga game is a big difference to paying 20 euro to watch 1860 Munich together with 50000 other people in the 2. Bundesliga.
I've had the same problem but I've found that once I put together some decent results in the higher league my attendences seem to improve. I had a season of relegation in Conference National with very poor crowds but then a season of upper mid table on returning to the Conference with crowds eventually averaging a little higher than Conference South.
I've found that the same thing happens season to season, whether you're promoted or not. It seems to be because if you over achieve one season, this success is aalmost imediately forgoton and the fans expect you to get relegated the next anyway and no one bothers to turn up. I have also found that two consecutive victories cause my attendance to go up by 400% (which seems a massive amount to me) before slowly falling agian following the inevitable defeats that followed!
Noticed the same thing in Sweden, attendances went down after I got promoted to the 1st Division Elite. It seems to go up when you are doing well in a league, but then people lose interest when you get promoted and aren't able to do as well in the higher division.
It's even more noticeable when your attendances are as pitiful as mine, getting a 1000 bums on seats is a rare event, even though we're in Europe

I understand what you're saying, but to go from 2800 people per HOME game, to just 200-300 people per home game is a little un-realistic.
That means almost 90% of my fans have stopped coming to home games after I've been promoted.
...or your home games were filled with visiting support and now the tyranny of distance and the higher ticket price and your comparably poor side (due to being in a higher league) has ensure visiting fans couldn't be arsed to make the trek.
In my current game my home gate varies from 8k for big games to 1k for poor games, and I'm convinced it's because of the visiting support.
