With pre season odds of 1000/1 for promotion it was suggested we'd be lucky to stay in the division. Bring in three players in the summer for a grand total of £15k - a D R from East Fife (£2k) an AM RL, ST from Stenhousemuir (£7k) and a D RC from Alloa (£6k). I sell DC, DM, ST for £240k to Hull and DM, AM R to St. Mirren for £160k and a back-up DM for £1k to Berwick.
Pretty good start to the season sees us lose only twice in first eleven games, but far too many draws keeps us down the bottom end of the table. We end the year with 22 points from 20 games and 9th in the table. There are five teams in and around us so nobody has mentioned the R word. Yet.
The league challenge cup came as a nice distraction to the league as we made it to the final for the second time under my management. And for the second time we lost. This time it was in a tame 2-0 defeat to Motherwell, who we then beat 3-1 away in the league four days later. Huh.
Anyway, strengthened the squad in January with a £35k AM L winger from King's Lynn and two long term loan signings (a DM and an M RC). Sell creative midfielder to Motherwell for £40k. Some high scoring defeats ruin my goal difference and my three best strikers get themselves injured during the last few weeks. A shift of formation sees reserve striker bang them in as we get some much needed victories - 4-2 at Gretna and 2-0s against Hamilton and Ross County at home. Last day of the season and we're 9th, needing a win to stay up but anything else will be 'good' enough for the relegation play-offs as long as Hamilton lose (which they do). We lose 2-0 at Queen of the South and are to play Brechin the play-offs. Lose 2-0 at home in a game we totally dominated and win 3-2 away to lose 4-3 on aggregate. We missed a penalty with 14 minutes to go that, if scored, would have put us through. After two successive promotions, we get relegated. On the bright side, Brechin lost the final to Raith Rovers...

His problem there is that Motherwell knew the league match was irrelevant and made sure they won the cup. The three points he got there didn't help in the end anyway, so the morale boost from the cup would have been more use.
