Heh, haven't played FM in a month, which means I haven't checked the boards in a month. I was surprised to see my thread near the top.
As for "cheating," I play a pretty solid LLaMa game, I think. Some of the zealots might slap me on the wrist, but nothing serious. I'll detail the gray areas, so you know what I'm talking about. I'm pretty naive about football, as in Ohio, USA, it means guys in helmets & tights. I'm really naive about lower league football - the only clubs I've ever seen are Leverkusen at Dortmund about 15 years ago.
I think my staff was too large to start. I quickly expanded out to about 3 scouts & 6 coaches. From what I've learned since, there's no way Elgin would have that staff in the Scottish Third Division, even if they're all part-time employees. I hoping that the rumors of staff limitations in FM 2007 proves true to help idiots like me.
As for signing players, instead of using the Transfer List, I sometimes sent scouts after players who were Not Needed / Transfer Listed at clubs a division above me. I also once signed a M L without scouting him. First year, acutally. It went something like this:
AssMan: "The transfer deadline is tomorrow. Oh, and Crappy McOnlyLeftWinger got injured for 3 months."
Me: "Crap. Hey, you - Random Scottish Winger on the Transfer List - can you play left wing?"
Random Player: "Uh... yeah... I'm not really good & all.. but I w.."
Me: "Will you accept room & board as payment? [To AssMan] Can we afford room & board?"
AssMan: "No, sir."
Me: "How about just food then?"
Random Player: "Uh.. okay?"
Me: "Hired!"
Tactics are pure LLaMa style... I picked a preset formation to start, then tried to tinker it to personnel a little bit each year.
