Season 2014/15
Elgin City - Scottish Premier League
Exciting year! Elgin City is now an established Premier club, and is in the Euro Cup for the first time. Borough Briggs is being expanded by an additional 5,500 seats, costing £5.2M. And due to a bug, Elgin played all but 3 home game at 1,500 capacity Pinefield due to the construction. Signed a centre back from Falkirk for £325k & a Swedish winger for £90k.
Early form was solid, and we were able to pace leaders Celtic reasonably well. Stunned Deportivo 7-4 in the first round of the Euro Cup, although we failed to advance past the group stage. Rangers faltered during early and mid-season, which inevitably resulted in Elgin being Celtic's primary title competition. Elgin's failure to beat Celtic this year was the deciding factor, with Celtic finishing 6 points clear.
2014-15 was also the year of the malcontents. Three starters noted their desire to leave for silverware. Two long time Badgers demanded more first team time. And three refused to sign new contracts. Ended up selling at least the troublesome striker for £275k to soon-to-be relegated Hibernian. Hope Division One counts as "silverware!"
Speaking of "silverware," Elgin Reserves won their fourth consecutive title, while our U19 squad won its third consecutive.
Scottish Premier League: 2nd, 23-3-9, 75-43, 83 pts Euro Cup: Group Stage Scottish Cup: 4th Round at Celtic. Second year in a row. League Cup: Quarters at Motherwell Old Firm: Celtic wins SPL & League Cup
My last save was with Stenhousemuir in Scotland, and despite being in SPL for 3-4 years I didn't manage to split the Firm, nor establish ourselves as the 3rd best club. Well done in such a short time!
Well, technically Dundee was in fourth in '14. They won promotion back to the SPL in '06, and quickly became one of the better teams outside the Old Firm. They placed 3rd four times in five years, and then Elgin's 3rd place finish in '14 knocked them to 4th. They had their worst finish in the SPL last year at 9th.
In-game at least, Dundee has deserved their success. They have done well in attracting quality defenders & midfielders every year.
And yes, the media is touting Dundee Utd as the most likely to dethrone Old Firm this year.
Sorry this one's long! Hope you agree it's worth it this year!
Season 2015/16
Elgin City - Scottish Premier League
Due to last year's malcontents, there was a lot of change. Including late last year, nine players out, including five starters, for £3.5M. Six players in for £2M. With Celtic seemingly unbeatable, and even more players complaining about the lack of silverware, I decided to <cringe> concentrate on cups this year. Just seemed more realistic, and maybe I can get a continental reputation.
Well, reality hurts. League form stunk to start, and was never great. Fixture congestion with 63 (!) total matches really strained our squad. Our mediocre season saw us in 4th. Fortunately, our cup form was pretty good. Aberdeen knocked us out of the League Cup, but Elgin went all the way to Scottish Cup final, knocking out Rangers in the quarters. Our European form was even better - destroyed Monaco 8-2, won our group of Arsenal, Athletic, and Young Boys, shocked Inter with a 95th minute goal to win 4-4 on away goals, had a comeback win against Athletic 5-4, and crushed Champions Cup holders Weder Bremen 4-1 to reach the ECC finals.
So of course, the week before both finals, half my starters get injured or suspended. My starting goalie twists a knee while the backup goalie catches a cold. My third string hadn't seen first team action all year, and I wasn't going to start with a cup final. So in goes the backup. Despite practically fielding Elgin Reserves -vs- Celtic and Scotty McScoresalot getting sent off in the 52nd minute, we win 3-2 on two penalties and a shocking 93rd minute "stupid goalie gives ball away" goal. In the SPL? I feel dirty. But hey, we win!
Now for the ECC Finals against Bayern München. We stay surprisingly even in the first half, and are tied 1-1. But they open the throttle in the second half, exposing weaknesses in my young full-backs, and deservedly win 3-2. Ah well. But hey... all that effort netted me £22M in profit (last year was a then-record £3M profit) bringing my balance up to £27M.
