I actually believe team talks make a lot of sense. now I ain't saying there isn't room for improvement (mostly on Ass Man interaction) but they are pretty strait forward once you get the drift.
The way I look at it, most players hear your team talk all the time, so unless you need to shake them your talks should be mellow - mostly incouragement & to a lesser extent ( usually when playing at home) "for the fans" - which is also good for knock out fixtures such as Cup finals.
I might give an individual "relax" talk to a less experienced/new player.
The other options should be used (
IMO) only in the correct situation - based on team & player form, the identity of the oponent, home adventage, ect.
duting the half-time talk I ecourage players who are having a 6-7 game if i'm drawing or up a little with individual "pleased" for players with 8's (unless unprofesional). I will only use the other options when I doing exeptionally well, or losing a game I should win.
