I think the basic framework is there tbh.

It is possible to change someones position to utilise him.

My Example (from fm07)

James Dayton - an absolutely class left winger for and LLM, fast and technically gifted.

With his high finishing and composure I decided to give him striker as his position, went onto to score more around 3 goals every 4 games to me before moving to Newcastle and becoming a first team striker.

Obviously they can make changes to this, but I believe if they are going to it needs a full revamp as the system set out seems pretty rigid.

Good posts though

I had similiar thoughts a while ago, but couldn't of put it as well as Alurny just did. Very well theorised!

I'd just like to chip in and say that it shouldn't have any relation to a players age. As a manager you should be able to ask any player to play anywhere. One way of sorting out the learning aspect would be to make it linked to the players performance while playing in that position. if they play well, get good match ratings over time it'd be nice to know that they are enjoying it and would like to play there more often. So no need for the AI managers to decide what position would suit a player, it all depends on the performances. Likewise the opposite could be true. Players throwing a strop because the manager thinks they play better at a different position than they prefer. (was it Solano that that happened to?)

Although you can retrain players to a certain extent at the moment, it'd be great to get some feedback from the player - "Thanks boss, I'd happily play there again" - "I didn't really enjoy playing there but I will if it means playing for the team" (Gerrard anyone?!) "I'm not happy on the right wing, I'm not involved enough there" (Andy Johnson for England?)

I say any player at any age, because there's been a number of positional moves for players in their prime. Giggs? now often plays CM. Solskjaer moved to RW. Gudjohnsen moved back to CM. Alan Smith moved to CM. Van bronkhorst, CM at Rangers, LB at Arsenal.

I'd like to be able to tell a young player to try and emulate another. A bit like mentoring, but maybe a famous star. eg, strong young striker - "I'd like you to play a similar way to Shearer", nippy winger - Shaun wright phillips. I don't really feel there is enough involvement in the development of players. Would joe cole be the same player he is without the help from Mourinho? I'd like to do a Mourinho on some of my players at Northwich Victoria (hmmm...) I don't really get the chance!

To echo a point made earlier on in the thread, I'd like to be able to tell a player that his technique is letting his game down. to tell a striker that if he wants to get in my team he needs to be stronger to hold the ball up. to tell a midfielder that without a higher work rate and better defensive skills he won't ever play for me (Mourinho (maybe mr eriksson as well?) + Joe Cole).

As a manager I don't really feel like I can develop anyone! They'd be just the same if they worked for any other manager. So its difficult to take a poor performing player, spot why he isn't performing and turn him into a match winner - the Sam Allerdyce effect. Without that feeling, its not realistic and its harder to get attached to a player, it might as well just be a bloody computer game.... errrr?!

Great posts everybody! Great to see some discussion going on in GQ!

Some great points raised by everyone involved and I am glad we all feel fairly similar on youth, training and positioning!

Alurny I would just like to say you have a well thought out idea and presented it extremely well

I think it is a really good idea but maybe hard to make code to actually put this in (no idea - have no computer programming knowledge - just speculation)

again congratulations on idea and lets hope it can be implemented

Quality idea, and I believe a certain Brazilian who has scored more goals in the world cup than anyone else in history started out in goal before one day playing up front where he was told to stay for good. Worked out for him I hear.

I already do this and find the training module pretty good for implementing it- however I agree that some flexibility regarding "natural position" and perhaps a change in terminology would be good.

My only real problem is inconsistency with regen mental attributes- it's very frustrating when you develop replacements for your first team from a very young age, only to find they want a new challenge when you're ready to play them or they're simply a bunch of neurotic psycopathic egotists.

I agree completely. More impact on the development of players would be great!
