In my team it's always one of two that's the key man, my central defender or central midfileder. They are alson Captain and Vice Captain.
Even when i won 9-0 in a cupgame, the defender was key man. Strange, espescially since one of my strikers scored 7 goals!!!
My keep was rated as my key man at the end of the game after putting in a "great perfomance, and making his saves without any fuss" or some such statement.
....... All well and good except I'd lost 3-0. The opposition had had 3 shots on target and my keeper had played so badly (rated at a 4) that I fined him two weeks wages!!
Not seen anything so blatantly wrong again though (and I can't remember if that was before or after updating my version from the original beta patch to the newer version).

Key man is whoever the pundit thinks is your best player, and is decided before the game - it's announced on the pre-match screen. So you get a report on how this player played, regardless of the performance of anyone else. And as it's supposed to be the best player in the team, it's not surprising that the same names keep cropping up.
