Secondly, I have a 8.01 patch update error. I've searched here and googled generally for an answer but cannot find a solution. I, therefore, humbly request help here.
Problem is that, when I attempt to update 2008 with the 8.01 patch I receive the following error.
--------------
'Error creating update file - CFootball\fm.exe
Error 0x00000020 - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
----------------
1: What other process? Task Manager doesn't reveal any other conflicting process om my PC [running Vista Ultimate].
2: 2008 is not active during the update.
3: The patch was initiated after a soft-boot.
4: I even installed 08 into a custom directory, as an alternative, after the default directory failed to update - as you can see above re. the error - i.e. cFootball.
The file conflict is specifically with fm.exe, the patch runs through 46 files sucessfully and hangs on file 47 - fm.exe.
I also have FM2007 on my HD, so I even renamed that game's .exe file, 'fm.exe1', just in case there was a conflict there. It didn't make any difference, however.
Aha! Success! I'm posting this in case anyone else has the same problem - the solution, I found, was to re-boot Windows in 'Safe' mode. Then run the patch, update the game and reboot in the normal way, then run the game. There's obviously some driver, somewhere, already loaded into Vista, possible 3rd party, which doesn't like the patch. Safe mode removes many of those drivers.
