Default Defensive midfielders holding on to the ball for too long. Any solutions to solve it?

Sometimes i notice my dm keep holding the ball for too long. Opposition will just tackle him and win the ball. It's rather irritating.

Any solutions to stop this?

My dm don't have hold up ball, mixed passing, no rwb, fwd run mixed, creative little, defensive(plus 2 notch) mentality.

Theres a few things you need to consider here that is other players around him in midfield if they all making forward runs he may not have an option for a pass.

His mentality is defensive so he is more likely to pass sideways or or backwards of he cant pass back for fear of striker intervention he will likely then hold on to the ball which means he gets tackled.

I've had two instances of this. A midfielder will get the ball and just seem to spin around and around. Eventually he gets fouled or losses the ball. It's very noticable when you have a guy start doing that because it will happen maybe 10 times a game.

In both cases I benched the guy for a game. It stopped. Don't know why and maybe it was just a coincidance but you might try it.

What is his Decision rating like? He may be holding on to the ball for so long because he doesn't have enough mental skill to make a good / quick decision. Eg Decisions, anticipation, teamwork, creativity.

Or maybe like dudester says - it may also be the players around him not making any options available. Check their stats also - off the ball, anticipation, etc.
