How do the different databases for different save games work?

Can I delete or modify an existing database AND still play the save game that used that database without it going into error-mode and corrupt?

Or do I need to keep that database if I want to still play a save game that uses that database?

OK, as I'm dying to know the answer, I'll try to ask it in a more simple manner:

Does a save-game still need the database or can it be deleted (it's not an original SI issued db)?

Hopefully that makes my question understanable.
