When you are play with an global mentality for example your players will position themselves relative to formation on the pitch this include the back line.
When in possesion the back line will move up with the rest of your team, being an equal distance apart.
When you then lose the ball the backline will:-
Retreat into a deeper position ready for the oncoming attack. (Deep line)
Stay relative to where the ball is on the pitch(Normal Line)
Push forward to try and catch the opposition offside(Push Up)
If the team loses possession it is whether the line moves forward or back or stays relative to the team.

Question 1: Do you recommend mixed forward runs for the centre backs and the keeper? Your examples suggest so.?
| Yes, I do. The reason is because these also offer the player with the ball even more options of to pass to. If you are playing with a defensive mentality a lot more passes are going to be played to the side and to the back.
If you set your DC's or GK to forward runs rarely you will find that they not be able to support the team in keepin the ball and if there are not decent option going forward then you will lose possesion. </BLOCKQUOTE>
You have learned that from watching AI Ass Man.

bcm, what's your point?
Wherever Leroy learned it, he helps others, not tries to get prize and/or attention. If you have time to watch Ass Man handling games, or learn things any other way, why don't you write it down? Or your contribution is limited to pointing out meaningless things?

| My point is, people are accusing the AI of cheatng, they should know it is not.
Secondly, if you check my posts history, you will see that I had mentioned it several times.

I have done 3 tests with the AI as documented in the AI behaviour thread. Yes I observed the AI, realised that it didn't cheat, applied common footballing sense to what it did, worked out how things interacted and wrote about it on here.
I don't mention the AI in any of my articles. This is due to the style of the work. I wanted it to be simple to understand and for the most number of people to get the benefit of the knowledge.
Unlike us, most people don't care that it is a game and that it has an AI controlling things. They just want to believe that the game works like real football, which I think it does.
In 6 months time, how many people will read a discussion about AI behaviour? Not too many I would guess. People who come on here want to know what works and how in simple footballing terms.
I hope that is what my work provides.

| I appreciate that you want to pass what you know about the game to others, right on. |

| So by lowering the d.line we may invite defensive teams to attack - only to hit back at them as play opens up?

This is correct. Especially effective with more direct systems. Deeper line will allow you your backs to get the the cleared ball before the oppositon allowing you to put the ball back into the box.
Pushing up will hopefully catch the opposing team offside giving you a freekick, especially if they are playing direct.
You need to decide how you want your team to play and if your players are able to perform their role |

First of all, I would like to say: Good thread!
Leroy, can you tell me your opinion about closing down and tempo. Are they related? And if so... does a higher tempo implies that your players will also close down quicker?
