I'm managing Juventus, my third season in charge. Brought them up as champions of Serie B, then finished 3rd in Serie A in my second season. 4 weeks into my third season, my painstakingly put together squad seem to have totally forgotten how to defend and how to pass the ball to each other, instead of to opposition players.
They are all excellent passers, with decent decision making etc. I've got my team set to short passing, slightly slow tempo - just trying to get them to knock the ball around, play good possession football and take their chances when they get them while remaining solid at the back.
They've let in 8 goals in 4 games - unheard of in my previous two seasons - and you can just sit and watch them pass the ball straight to the other teams players. Stupid passes to the wrong player/place instead of simple passing to the nearest available man.
Thanks, maybe I'll give that a go. I've been using a really simple 442, with a DM and AM in the middle (like Hargreaves and Gerrard) then a big man, little man up front (like Shearer and Owen) and a ball winner/ball player at the back (Terry and Ferdinand), with wingers and overlapping fullbacks. Don't know where it's going wrong!
You could also try playing wide, which might encourage your players to try and find more space and beat marking. Alternatively, you could just use a standard tactic without any changes - the pre-made tactics are mostly pretty well tuned, and changes often have a bad effect even if they seem to make sense
Been there. Tweak something. Tempo for starters. Also, what is your time wasting? Sometimes if it is set too close to rarely, they will move the ball too quickly and make bad passes.
In general, what did you change from the other seasons moving forward? That would seem to be where your problems are.
cheers all...i'll try the suggestions you've made...
i've basically switched from a very attacking approach to a solid, possession based 442. the game stats are usually 60% possession, and 80% pass completion, which is exactly what i was looking for, but they still keep making silly passes that are costing goals. they've conceded 12 in 8 games! thankfully, we've scored 14, but those are the sort of numbers you should get if you're playing newcastle/keegan 'we'll score one more than you' attacking football, not on a system based on defence.
