I'm not new to the game. I don't complain on the GQ forum. I don't win matches 10-0. I don't do Chelsea.

Rubbished by the SI guys? I'd bloody expect them to . I've spent 7 or 8 years playing CM and FM, I can tell what's happening in my games, I can predict it... but I can't avoid it.

This is exactly why I find this thread so very interesting. Were it on GQ then I'd steer clear, but when the people I reckon know most about the game start questioning the mechanics of it all I get worried!

I've not experienced anything like this that can't be explained in a way that makes sense and "fits" with the way football works IRL.

Hmmmm, this last bit may sound patronising, so I'll apolgise in advance....sorry......but are you certain that it couldn't be because that you're playing with an FM2005 mindset in the superior/more realistic (IMO) FM2006 environment?

Sorry so many of you are having issues with this. I haven't seen any evidence of horrid pre-determination. The following are observations for me in my 9.5 seasons. I'm playing 6.0.1, watch Extended highlights in the Match Engine for every game, and only manage the first team. I'll try & relate my findings as best possible without tipping.

If a team has a 1-goal lead with 5 minutes left, chances are they'll win. Not always, and there are more goals score in the last 5 minutes of a game than any other 5-minute stretch. It's quite obvious watching the match engine that the AI changes tactics very late in the game. I believe this is the major reason for the higher amount of goals in the last 5 minutes.

For those folks who regularly outshoot the opponent & lose: Without tipping, is it possible that your offensive personnel & tactics do not compliment each other? Or that the strikers you've signed are simply not prolific? Or that your goalkeeper is just not satisfactory for the competition? Whether it's the personnel I've picked or the tactics I've developed, I've never regularly dominated an opponent only to lose. My team has been more likely to steal a win from a dominant opponent like Celtic or Rangers than lose in such a fashion.

For those who aquaplane at the same time every season - well, there could be explanations for that too. I've had past teams that struggle at a certain time of year. My current team still struggles in wet, wintery conditions or obviously if I have fixture congestion. I haven't found all the solutions - but I have improved my season-long consistency. And my slumps are rarely mysterious - I can often point to tough opponents, fixture congestion, injuries, or inadequacies in my own team as a reason.

In conclusion, anecdotal evidence carries little weight. For every person that has said "FM 2006 games are pre-determined," there are likely several folks who haven't posted here who haven't noticed a thing.

If folks really want to prove something, this would be a neat little test:

Open your save. Play 5 games. Record your result for each game. Save, exit, repeat 20x. Maybe 100x (multiple people can contribute).

If we do this 20x or 100x and see that the first game after a save is significantly different than the next 4, then we're on to something.

I'm all for scientific research....but i'm lazy aswell.

I have noticed the patterns that our Mod and others have pointed out. I just try and count to 10 and breath deeply. Then I throw a hissy fit.

I'm hit by aquaplaning sometimes. It's really stupid, and most of the time, I had no idea what triggered it on, nor what triggers it off.

Like Ian said, it can be very frustrating when none of your actions seem to make any effect in results.
