Looking at that penalty awarded to Italy, I have to say that it's a penalty. It doesn't matter whether or not he intended to take a player down, the fact is he was impeded, and the ball wasn't played. It didn't even look like much of a dive while it was being played in slow motion to me, honestly.

I was hoping the Aussies would win, but the penalty was deserved, if you follow the law as written in the law book. The red card incident I missed, unfortunately, and can't comment on.

My 2 bobs worth...

Red card was harsh, penalty was very harsh. Italy defended very very well and we didnt stretch them enough when we had the numerical advantage.

Definitely, the Aus v Ita. I quite liked the Por v Hol game. Nothing quite as entertaining as a game continuing with players writhing on the ground. I was waiting for when the players hack each other down and the GKs a left to finish off the game by themselves.

Can't happen because there's a minimum amount of players that have to be on the pitch.

I disagree. Any person with a modicum of motor skills could have easily hopped over the defender on that play.

Watching the replay with this in mind, you will see that the player made absolutely no effort to jump over the defender. He was perfectly content to simply fall over the defender and draw a very unsporting penalty.

It's not a dive, but it's not a legitimate attempt to play the ball either. It shows very poor sportsmanship and a lack of guts. A player with real courage and determination will continue the play and try for the goal. Instead, the defender lost his footing, and the attacking player saw fit to simply fall forward and draw a ridiculous penalty.

It's never a penalty. Reminds me of playing Kick Off 2 on the Amiga where if the other player slid in and missed you could run over his leg and get a foul.

Yeah, it was daft of the Blackburn Aussie, but it was still cheating. The Italian knew exactly what he was doing.

Gutted for Oz, was hoping they could go further - but tbh they only have themselves to blame, they had plenty of opportunities.

Valid point, BoroPhil!

We had 40 minutes of a man advantage and we owned them throughout the period and could really only muster a couple of half chances. Not good enough. Sad.

I put it down to lack of big match experience in the side. Take out *gout infected red* and we had a couple of blokes who played a EUFA cup final recently and nothing beyond that.

Or. Maybe the two Parma guys (and the reserve goalie to a lesser extent) didn't want to get sacked by their club side

I was thinking skinhead Parma player might not enjoy going back to his club after getting a man sent off if we won. Could have been even worse if he had scored the winner, his heritage being the salt in the wound. Alas it was not too happen. :kris102:

To be honest I think we should have gone attacking sooner and thrown on journeyman striker sooner or possibly thrown on tall bloke who looks like a pirate. We never had enough numbers forward.

I was actually reading this morning that baldy Italian-Aussie and midfield Italian-Aussie actually speak to each other in Italian usually - whether they did this yesterday, I doubt!

Additionally, the German strike-force usually communicate in Polish apparently, but decided not to in the Poland game.

Back to Oz, they looked like they didn't know what to do with the extra man. A bit more ambition perhaps, and they could have won it.
