First of all: Remember we are in LLM. So no tactic naming, neither tactical indepth discussion nor instructions naming.
Woe to you if you fail to abide by this!
It has recently struck me that I am most inept when it comes to creating tactics (but what LLaMa isn't? ).
It is not a matter of being not knowledgeable about football or not being attentive enough. It is just that (as a LLaMa) I feel more joy from developing players (seeing them grow over a 5 season period) than taking the pain of changing and trimming my tactics with constant interruptions in the gaming sessions.
It might have something to do with being (quite reciently) married and wanting to get more from my playing sessions than just a (often frustrating) drawing board session.
So I took a decision in my career save and forgot all about creating fancy new tactics or tweaking the ones I have now and started using predefined ones to suit the scenarios the game throws to me.
Sure I do still use some of the old tactics, but the freedom obtained has allowed me getting a better playing speed.
Sure the tactics aren't perfect and could use some tinkering, but as I'm applying them just for scenarios (attack, counter, contemporise, park the bus) I don't think that aforementioned tweaking necessary.
Would that I could have discovered this earlier and saved myself countless hours of pain and frustration when trying to figure if one notch more in a certain slider would finally make my winger act as I wanted
I heartily recommend every tactic non-genious and most certainly the newbies to try it.
So what about you?
Are you in the quest for the ultimate über 'Super-Roundabout to Elgin'* tactic or have you just been using predefined ones for ages?
I ususlly make one tactic that I use mostly, and when needed I tweak it during matches... I don't use the pre-defined ones as I have some special instructions for some players.
Over a long save I'll develop a tactic and perservere with it. (Until said tactic crashes and burns and I end up using 5 different tactics/formations within the space of 5 matches in the hopeless attempt to stop the slide).
When i get to 2030+ and game begins to play tricks I'll quit and resart with another team/country/tactic/formation. I dont think I've ever used the pre-defined tactics.
I concur with your thoughts re seeing players develop over a period of time. I get a warm feeling all over when a youngster who I've brought up through the U18 etc develops into a star at international level.
I play with one basic tactic, which is tweaked according to the players available and their relative strengths and weaknesses, and a second which I've developed myself (due to an emergency, player injured and no substitute in his position, the game was saved...snatched from the jaws of defeat...so I've kept that one), and a third, hardly used, for when a certain position is injured.
I use whatever predefined tactic best suits the player I aim condemmed with and then tinker with the sliders until it works or I find a tenner under a bush and can go and get some differant players. I very rarely try and setup entirely new formations unless I'm forced into it by lack of players in an important position or a desperate situation in a game. I usually end up with a desperate last stand formation and a must get a goal now formation of my own but thats usually more through accident then design.
The idea of playing endless friendlys trying to work out the absolutely perfect way to set up my team fills me with dread. Pick the best 11, send them out, blame them when it all goes wrong. I'm the Sven of LLM
I've got my own tactic which I've used for years with varied success.. basically I like it cos it's visually appealing
used it with East Stirling back about 3 or 4 years ago and it was a real no-score bore draw thing that kept us up in the SPL
just played one season with FM06 (first time I've finished a season of this game for about 3 years I think) and used the same formation except this time there's buckets of goals for my Newport Co. team. - mind you this is the ECS instead of the SPL
I usually have one basic formation which I fiddle with when something goes wrong and is changed, of course, according to the players at my possession. I managed to develop a reasonably working "park the bus" version of the same tactic and an "all out attack" version for the home games which I use when the AI gets all defensive, far less effective than the "park the bus" one.
In other words, I've sorted out my defensive woes of the CM versions and I'm having a lot more trouble going for a goal than defending a lead in FM.
I also like signing youngsters and I've no qualms whatsoever about using 15yo's as my first choice - there's nothing better in this game than discovering and blooding youngsters and having them follow you throughout their career (special mention to a 15yo English FLC at East Fife who was my first choice for more than 15 years).
I use the same tactics (slight variation of predefined system tactics) for each game be it home or away, cup or league. I will only change that if injuries force my hand.
