I'm an old fart too.
It wasn't meant to be dismissive, I'm certainly not a gangsta-wannabe and I'm one of the most non-conforming, non-posing people I know...
I agree it wasn't the most eloquent way of saying, "I made a mistake, my brain wasn't quite switched on at the time and my shame knows no bounds. I hold my hand up and unreservedly apologise for my faux pas", and as I said, perhaps it would have been better to use the more contrite, submissive version, in retrospect.
However, that really isn't my style, so I figured a flippant 'I put my hand up, I did a boo-boo' style remark would cover my shame sufficiently. The language I used I didn't really think about to be honest - it was a quickfire, red-faced response. I know that generally on the forum that kind of 'gangsta' americanism doesn't go down well, but I figured I'd been around long enough that people would know that that isn't normally how I speak, so would take it in context.
So, yeah, sorry for the offensive slang. My bad

<-'ironic' and pertaining to the discussion - please don't flip your wig
On general principle, I actually agree with you totally - I'm often the one taking your stance towards others. But if one's command of the language is sufficiently broad then I see no problem with 'borrowing' slang and colloqualisms to communicate a point. Even the big S wasn't above using 'common' language... Not that I'm comparing of course, and obviously I didn't communicate my point as well as I'd hoped, and it did the exact opposite of my intent, which was to quietly apologise for my error and hope that it would go relatively unnoticed. No such bloody luck eh?
Bah - pedants and pettifoggers!
