It was actually a striker with certain attributes Stan, although having no goalie would probably throw a spanner in the works.

I've found that things like the actual players you've got on the pitch and their fitness and morale compared the opponent's have more bearing on the result than the intricacies of the tactics, assuming that you are playing with something resembling a normal and logical tactic.
It got so frustrating mucking around with tactics the whole time, whenever I started a new game I'd spend hours redo-ing all the training and tactics to what I thought was good, so one day I decided to delete them all and do it the way UELLfan described.
And I agree, one of the best things I've done with the game.

I always use my own tactics and am always tweaking it about dependant on oposition, i.e. with Thurrock v Maidenhead I'd go attacking whereas if I'm playing a game like Stockport v Thurrock (me being Thurrock) I'm going to have everyone back whilst trying to nick a goal.

I started with a very basic pre-defined formation. I made a normal, attacking & defensive posture of said formation. I have a group of tactics in a different formation that I've utlizied in the past due to injuries.
I tweak my tactics & update my free kick takers & captains once during the pre-season. No more than that. I'm quite happy with the results relative to time invested.

Addendum - my tactics work as advertised, shockingly enough. My attacking posture often leads to goals (for either team), while the defensive posture really slows the game down. It's why I have such a hard time fathoming aquaplaning or accusations of pre-determined results.

I'm all for the KISS approach.
If I were a tactical football genius, I wouldn't play football manager games but stand in a worldcup final. |
