I tend to use modified versions of the standard tactics.

I often spend a 1st season tweaking the tactics to fit my players, but afterwards I seem to fall into the habit of finding players to suit my tactics!

I tend to use the predefined tactics and then play with the sliders to experiment. I use 2 main formations with a a 3rd for special occaisions.

I usually use one tweaked formation (sliders) as my main one. However, I usually have a couple more that I have on my back burner as conditions require (usually injuries). If all my STs are hurt, I'll go to a formation that only uses one up front.

I created my own 'super tactic' which promptly got me relegated. So I used a pre-defined tactic and got my assman to pick the team. I go on a massive unbeaten streak and end up getting relegated respectably. Go figure!
So that's my new routine, get my team relegated then get my assman to pick up the pieces. I think I must be more LLMiddleManagement than LLM.

My son pointed out, last night, that I was not the tactical genius I think I am. He has noticed over my 15 year save the fact that my away tactics are extremely successful but all my various home tactics are basically crap.

In my present season I lead the table on away results, am fourth from bottom on home results, and am lying 8th in the table (early season stage).

Thinking about it he is right, I constantly tweak the home tactic as I can never manage to find one that is succesful on a regular basis, or even a semi-regular basis.

I generally only have one tactic that I alter slightly for each encounter depending on if its home/away, the players avalible, quality of the opposition and their formation. It's only a predefined tactic with minor alterations so I can't claim to be a tactical genious.

I have however been making an effort to improve my tactics over my past couple of seasons but have ended up hardly changing them at all. My one gain is the development of a tactic to use when down to ten men that has had some decent results, although it needs more testing and relies heavily on one certain player being availible.

Indeed. I have 3 variations based on a default tactic that I tweaked way back when I got FM 2006: Defend, normal, and attack. I just shoehorn the players into it no matter what club I am at, and then look for players to fit it better.
