Well I'm new to the forum so go gently on me! I'm an experienced player of previous FM games and been playing FM2008 for a week now.
I always start my career on the bottom of the pile and work my way up to better things, just in FM2008 I'm struggling like hell. I can build up a side (over a period of time) that looks good on paper compared to the others in the division, yet my results seem so random. I regularly beat the top of the league and then get a 4-0 beating by a non league side in cups or teams at the bottom of my league, who dont have players as good as mine.

I've tinkered with tactics a bit, read advice on team talks from other sections of this forum. I generally create a formation around the players I have at my disposal (then tinker with individuals settings), but I never really play more than 2 formations in a season as to me this is pretty realistic for any teams, particularly those in lower divisions as players are less intelligent and playing a different tactic every week would just confuse them!!!! I'm just concerned at the weird results. It seems the match engine perhaps places too much emphasis on the 'random' result factor and differing tactics then the quality of players and cohesion of players understanding their tactics.

Please note this is not a rant, I'm just wondering if players who also like the starting out with the bottom clubs route are having this problem. If I've posted to the wrong forum I apologise and please move it to the more appropriate location..... just let me know you've done that

Welcome to our forum.

Please bear in mind that we not just play in the lowest league available but also follow a set of rules and guidelines as laid down in the header of our forum. This includes that we try to twinker our tactics and twinker till they have changed from utterly useless to only temporarily useless. That's part of our challenge.

Yes, we most likely do **** but we still strive to finally find that one tactic with the right bunch of players that will us bring some success.

And even when we manage to have some success here and there the game will throw the predictable loss against a lower league team / almost relegated team into our face. We curse, we swear and go one.

Personally I almost always do very lousy the first season. I might pick up after that (and after version 3, 4 or 5 of my tactics) but that's not certain.

Part of trying things out on your own means occasional failure. Most of us, if not all, have been relegated/sacked once. But even then, there's always another team to destroy.

Finally it's up to you how you want to play your game. In here we like to responsible for our own failure (and maybe some success) and get the satisfaction out of that.
