I'm not from SI. Probably they're enjoying a day off for Christmas...
But anyway, an obvious explanation is that the reputation of a team influences the choice of tactics.
If the opposition is convinced that Chelsea's youth team is a world class side, then instead of striving to give them a good thrashing they'll keep it tight and be happy with a draw. Similarly, if Grant thinks that it's a game against a smaller club which Chelsea really ought to be winning, despite their poorer players and bad form, he'll be a lot more ambitious in his approach.
Reducing the reputation of a big name club with big name players has the opposite effect on tactics - the manager will play for the draw due to a lack of confidence in his overall side despite the presence of world class players, whilst the opppposition will smell victory. Additionally, it also has an obvious unsettling effect on big name players who end up want to move to a bigger club.

Sorry but that just doesn't make sense at all to me!
Is an opposite manager then so dumb to not see that this team would have only crap players?
The reducing reps part i do agree with you, that players will be unhappy to stay and results would go down, but with the higher reps this seems so unrealistic!
