Use the same formation at home and away, it is important to understand that the tactics will change if you are playing home or away.
For home matches, under team instructions, put the creative freedom, one notch below (much)and the mentality to halfway between attack and all out attack, put the defensive line to two notches below normal, tick tight marking, play offside and use playmaker. Do not tick counter attack and Do not use a target man.
Under player instruction use the (set to) e.g for GK, set to GK. This will automatically set the tactics for the position, Get the DM to hold up the ball, if good influence, make him captain, get the AMC to have free role, and make sure you (set to) both your attackers to strikers.
Check the fitness and morale of your player before going to match, some assistants will sometimes pick players unfit, or very poor morale, but it is still a good idea to ask your assistant advice on picking a team.
Now you are ready to go to your HOME match, please note that you shall tell your players you expect to win the match, and at half time, if not winning, tell players you are dissapointed, above 8 delighted, and on 6, or below, you can make the difference, and if still not winning with 60-65 minutes played, make any substitutions of players still not above level 6 and put your mentality to all out attack and creative freedom to all out much. Follow this and you will win most games at home and lose very few.
For Away, ok, same formation, except dont tick use playmaker, tick tight marking, counter attack and use target man. set the creative freedom to one notch above little, and the mentality half way between defensive and ultra defensive. put the defensive line, one not deeper than deep, in player intruction, you dont need to do the set tos again as you only ever need to do this once, untick the box telling the DM to hold up the ball, untick the playmakers free role, and choose your targetman, set one of your strikers to set to (target man) whom will hold up the ball. Do not play offside.
If you follow this you will win the majority of your away matches, if you have two or three home or away games in a row, you do not need to make changes, just pick team and go to match. you do need to have the players who can play these positions. I mentioned in team instructions to set the ceative freedom, mentality and defensive line, all other instruction are to remain on normal.
If away and drawing or losing at half time, tell your players you are pleased, those above 8 delighted and those on 6, have faith.
I like this formation as well (used to be called 4-4-2 diamond). And my approach is not much different from yours except that I think for a home game against a weaker team (eg. lower division team or bottom of table team that come to play defensive against you) this formation doesn't allow much of scoring since you pull down one of your midfield into defense. For that case, 4-4-2 (or attacking) is better. This formation may give you a marginal win; regular 4-4-2 or attacking should give you a greater win in case you care about how much you'd win.
What I do is put a midfielder into DM and play the wingers in the AM position and not ML/MR positions. alongside them, is the AMC and two striker, this is very attacking and you need the DM to help out in defence which is the balance. I pull one of my midfielders into DM and one of my midfielders into AM which is also balanced but push the 2 wingers forward, so they are more attacking.
