4-2-3-1 continental - the way forward for solid free flowing football
I believe I have the answer for all tactical issues! A 4-2-3-1 which will shape like this
FC FC
AML AMC AMR
^ ^
DMC DMC
DL DC DC DR
In this present era of football I believe this shape has the highest potential of success for any team.
I believe the key for this tactic would be the role midfielders, I am looking for these players to perform as follows
DMC - will pass the ball around the field and dictate play from deeper than the amc An example of this is andrea pirlo, michael carrick or xavi alonso who dictate play and the tempo on the pitch.
DMC- The other DMC will be less cultured player than the other dmc and more of a midfield destroyer purely on the pitch to break up play and play simple to a more cultured player An example of this is Owen Hargreaves, Michael Essien and Gilberto Silva
AML/AMR- The wingers will be their to provide width, crossing ability and running with the ball
they would also be useful joining the striker in the box when a cross comes in from the opposite wing. An example of this is cristiano ronaldo, lionel messi and ronaldinho.
AMC- The AMC is a big part of this tactic he will dictate alot of the play high up the pitch like a play maker and have the most free role on the pitch. An example of this is Juan Roman Riquelme.
For the Defenders ideally I would like the fullbacks to cross from deep and the biggest importance is for the defence to keep their shape at all times.
The role of the Striker is to hold up the ball when necessary and to get in behind the defence when needs be. an example of a player who does this well would be the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Peter Crouch and Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
I believe this tactical has good potential in all aspects to control the game leaving room for creative freedom and flair high up the pitch, with a solid base deeper on the pitch.
I need the help of the best tactic minds to develop this tactical idea, as to be honest I myself am not the best at this but I believe this is a project worth pursuing.

i play a very similar formation to this, except i have one DM moved up to MC
i use the DM as the playmaker so he can spread play all over the pitch and it works great, allowing more freedom for people to makes runs
because the midfield controls play, my strikers job is purely to get into the box and get goals, so he has a high mentality and i usually set target man to 'run onto ball'. he doesnt have to be fast, just good off the ball/anticipation etc
its a good all round tactic with lots of options on the pitch, and its worked well for me in various leagues

That's a link to my thread - It discusses a lot of Pro's/Con's and ways to develop the tactic - theres lots of different tactics provided there too - quite a successful thread too since it was 8 pages

This is the shape Barca have been playing since Rijkaard too over, worked for them IRL.
Interesting to see how you develop this as 1 man up front doesn't fill me with much confidence. Goals are hard to come by in this version in my experience, you generally need to create 17-20 chances just to score 2 or 3 goals with 1 man up front these chances are going to have to be very clear cut chances therefore he would have to have very specific attributes. My guess would be high attributes in Pace, acceleration, anticipation, composure anf finishing, I know all forwards need these but I would suspect that as a lone striker these would have to all be 17+.

ive recently took a liking to a lone striker, as long as he has support of course. it works best not to have him hold the ball up, especially in a 4-5-1 as the midfield can control play so the striker just needs to get in the box and finish things off. i usually set them to 'run onto ball' but they dont really need to be fast. just give them a high mentality so theyre on the defenders shoulders, and as long as they have good off the ball then they should have their chances
ive used players like Gyan, Okaka, Pekhart, Tchite, Defoe, Crouch blah blah blah in various games and internationals, and theyve all done well. some are fast, some are strong, some are good in the air, but they can all work well if you play it right
