It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default how to go more defensive on RoT?

im clearly struggling to get a direct answer for using RoT.

if i want to go more defensive, then i obviously get the tempo slower and width narrower, but what about changing mentaleties? as i obviously dont get it.
if i want to go defensive then i should change my DCs mentaleties to 4, FBs to 8 and so on?

I think RoT is old-fashioned :p

I use mentality instructions in other way and seems ok to me:

Ultra defensive 1
Defensive2-6
Defensive midfield 7-9
Midfield 10-11
Attacking midfield 12-14
Attacking15-19
Ultra attacking 20

So, my theorem is that defenders never should be ticked with attacking sliders (altough wing backs could perform attacking role with normal mentality, giving more width and FWR).

You want to play more defensively with DL deeper? Give slider 2 for your defenders. Want to play DL more higher? Just set slider 6 to defenders. Let´s take an example with my current team, AC Milan (FM 07).

GK Dida - 1
RB Oddo - 12
LB Jankulovsky - 12

I play 4x3x2x1 and wnat my backs to overlap (FWR often, RWB mixed).

CD Nesta - 4
CD Maldini - 4
MDC Pirlo - 10
MC Gattuso - 8
MC Ambrosini - 8

Pirlo have low tackling and low CD. Gattuso and Ambrosini do hard job and help more on defensive dutie.

AML Seedorf - 14/15
AMR Kaká - 14/15
Inzaghi - 17
(R. Oliveira - 16 with RWB often)
(Gilardino - 18 with FWR often and RWB mixed)

Hope it helps.

i thought RoT was the best thing for fm07?
or is it RoO? anyway i struggled with RoO pretty bad, and now im having hard time with RoT... im getting frustrated.

im not going to mirror your playing style, although i appriciate your input

Im just looking for the right tweak to go more defensive when needed, seems like some help from wwfan or rash could sort it all up.

Hi Korzy,

As you probably know already, RoT= Rule of Two and requires 1 tactic for away and 1 tactic for home; RoO = Rule of One and requires that individual player's mentality differ only by 1 at a time - By that I mean if GK's mentality is set to 3, DC's meantality shld be 4, FB 5, DM 6, Winger 7, AM 8, Striker 9.

So combining the two theories, I have two tactics each utilising the RoO mentality rule.

The mentality numbers above is actually my away tactic (or the attacking-away tactic as discussed by wwfan before), this works wonders for me when I am always favourites to win comfortbally away (when I am liverpool/milan). Depending on the prematch odds and how offensive the opponent formation is, I might adjust the mentalities down pre-game, i.e. go 1 notch down for each individual mentality when pre-match odds say I am the slight underdog: so it becomes GK 2, DC 3, FB 4 and so on.

My home tactic has my GK on 10, DC 11, FB 12, DM 13, Winger 14, AM 15, striker 16. This has almost always worked. Sometimes if I am underdog at home and the opposition gives me an offensive formation, I adjust all mentality by 1 notch - thus going more defensive.

So...going more defensive for me involves mainly clicking 1 notch down (2/3 notches down can work sometimes too)for each player -takes about 3 secs to tweak those. I do it during the match when the opposition goes more offensive. I also adjust forward runs so that FBs and DMs are on rarely. I never adjust passing/tempo/width unless opponent goes 4-2-4.
I always have a deep d-line no matter what (doesn't work in current 08 engine coz of closing down bug).

If you start with my mentalities and then realise that in the 1st 10-15 mins or so you lose a lot of possession and the opposition gets a lot of chances, it is best if you adjust your mentalities quickly. Normally I just do 1 notch down and it works. Sometimes it involves clicking conter attack on to counter offensive 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 or offensive 4-4-2. How to tweak and when to tweak is 1/2 trial and error and 1/2 experience +luck So even though the above sets work the best for me, you may find that for your team u need some adjustments (e.g. lower mentality if you have a weaker team).

Hope these help.

Result by 2022

(In case you are wondering how I got 21 league wins by 2022, I was with Fluminense for a few years at the start and they got state leagues every year in Brazil.)

what about the strategy thread guide by WWfan? don't you follow with with the tactics mentioned there? for example:
control
counter
etc..

and what if you want to play a quicker football? it seems you're playing only normal tempo and wide football

Not too sure which strategy guide you meant...Don't remember reading about control/counter.

I don't play wide football as you can see from my 1st screenshot on team instructions. Everything is normal for me and my players decide when to play wide when to play quick as they are all on creativity freedom normal. If you try my tactics you will see that you get a lot of commentaries such as "superflowing football"

arr forgot to say that I do opposition instructions for those

As you can see from my screeshot, my team closing down is on normal, tight marking is not ticked. However, every match I do opposition instructions to tight mark all strikers and any AM or MC with good heading abilities. I close down all DCs and GK ( 1 in 15 games or so you see your striker take the ball from GK/DC and put it straight into the net ^^). I close down any midfielders with higher than 15 long shots, but if they have high pace and dribbling as well, I tightmark.

Make sure you do opposition instructions for AI's subs. As 80% of the times a sub striker will make a few shot on goals shorted after he's subbed on, if you don't tight mark him.

Sounds a bit complex now eh..

so basicly, you're using no CD instructions? only team for everyone on pitch? that's quiet odd, i have to admit.

why would you want your FCs to close down just like your DCs?
