why would you want your FCs to close down just like your DCs?
| It's correct that I don't bother with individual instructions for creativity freedom, CD, tempo, passing at all. For me these will distort my overall tactic and players will not be adaptable to different situations. Say if you set your MC to pass short all the time, he will ignore an oppotunity to go for a long through ball. Or if you set your DC to close down often, he will close down everyone often, which is very dangerous if he is aginst fast dribblers.
Therefore for me how often to close down depends on opponent players. If an opponent midfielder has good long shots, I want everyone (strikers/DCs/midfielders) of my team to close him down if they are near him. On the other hand if I am against a fast dribbler, I don't want anyone to try close him down coz that will likely result in losing defensive positions and giving opponent space.
So yes on the face closing down on strikers and DCs are set the same. But opposition insrtuctions now determine how often they close down and who to close down. Sometimes my strikers close down more than my DCs coz my DCs usually just tight mark strikers while my strikers are told to close down opponent DCs and GK often |

The way I play Milan...give it a try and watch full match to see any improvements.
Closing down individual instructions for 4x4x2 diamond:
Dida (4)
Oddo (6)
Nesta (4) and tight marking
Maldini (4) and tigh marking
Jankulovski (6)
Don´t like high closing down for defenders because believe in advantages of playing zonal. This way, defenders will maintain their positions more carefully.
Pirlo (8)
Gattuso (14) and tight marking
Ambrosini (14) and tight marking
Seedorf (12)
Kaká is injured and Gourcuff plays sometimes. Closing down = 10 means that such player will try to catch ball near midfield line. When I set Gattuso and Ambrosini = 14 I expect they pressure opponent near AM position. Seedorf, playing as AMC, will close down a bit after midfield line because he don´t have an outstanding tackling attribute.
Inzaghi (16)
Ricardo Oliveira (16)
Or any other ST (Gilardino, Ronaldo)
I want them to focus on closing down up the pitch, trying to surprise some unskilled defences. No need strikers close down deeper because I always want them to move on opponent field.
By the way, last 7 games I didn´t suffer any goal so seems to result at least to me.
Cheers

I use narrow 4x4x2 diamond since i play with DMC - MC - MC - AMC.
Because Kaká broken his leg and Gourcuff isn´t very reliable, my last 2/3 games I played with:
DMC Ambrosini (his heading skills permit team take ball on long passes)
MC (farrow to the lef) Seedorf
MC (farrow to the right) Gattuso
MC Pirlo (free role and high creative freedom; sometimes I ticked playmaker box when see he has lots of space to pass ball around and make attacking movements).
So, this is the result of closing down individual instructions:
Ambrosini (8)
Seedorf (12 when play more defensive - 14 when playing home or need to attack more)
Gattuso (12-14 and same behaviour like Seedorf)
Pirlo (14)
If I was you, playing wide 4x1x2x1x2 and based on your players (http://community.sigames.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=21019056&f=1519717&m=2132093153&r=9 292035253#9292035253) I´ll set as:
Right Back (6)
Central Defender (4)
" " (4)
Left Back (6)
DMC (8)
MR (10)
ML (10)
AMC (12)
Since you play wide formation, distance with players will be more significant. Then, it´s very important, when loosing possesion, that your players don´t close down to much and try to keep them well positioned. Other advice is to play a bit more narrowed unless you playing home or agaisnt a worst team. Let´s say setting team closing down slider at 8 spot but adjust between 10-12 while watching full game to see whats fits your style.
ST (14-15)
ST (16-15)
Not quite sure, but imaging you have one striker with mentality slider at 15 and other at 17, I´ll set first with 14 closing down and second one with 16. If both with same mentality instructions, then switch closing down around 15).

| It comes from Tactical Theorums & Frameworks.
Rule of Two - each player has another teammate within two mentality "notches" of another.
So, if the DCs are on 8, the DL might be on 10, the MC on 12, the wingers on 14 and a striker on 16.
RoT is outdated in my opinion, and has been ditched in TT&F really for a RoO (Rule of One - similar to RoT, but obviously with only one notch between players). With the TT&F, we're still experimenting with RoT in some situations, but it seems rather difficult to get right.

| If you re-read the TT&F thread you should check the frameworks. Basically, yes, you should be moving the mentality down for defensive tactics, and up for attacking tactics.
Of course, TT&F has been updated for FM08 and is more based on tactic sets rather than home and away tactics. It includes what we've learned over the past months of FM07 (particularly the Play FM thread), but it hasn't been posted here yet.
