How is "Lewes" pronounced? Two syllables? Please help. I'm American.
That information will be helpful because I, Guppy Gilmore, have just taken over as manager in the Conference South.
We're about to begin the 2006-07 campaign after declining various employment offers for an entire year, waiting for the right offer. Northwich Victoria (too rich), Stalybridge (12 pts from safety with only a third of the season left), Woking (Conference National) and Nuneaton (high expectations following recent relegation from the Conference National) all came calling but were politely refused.
So I spent the summer watching a fascinating World Cup, including a thrilling 1-0 final with the Czech Republic defeating the USA. (!!?) Oddly, as in real life, these two sides came out of the same group with Ghana.
Lewes finished 4th in the Conference South in 2004-05 but fell off last year, to 14th. The Board expects a midtable finish this year; the supporters expect new transfers --- which may be a challenge with a transfer budget of zero! Mid-table seems about right. The squad has a mix of strengths and weaknesses.
On the positive side, we have four serviceable strikers --- including a 19-year old Arsenal castoff signed just before my arrival. The goalkeeper position seemed weak but with Number One injured, our 20-year old backup turned in a wonderful performance today in our first friendly --- a creditable 1-0 loss to Championship side Plymouth Argyle. Hopefully the youngster will develop properly. The team captain and centre half seems a typical strong English defender with good character attributes.
But there are problems. The prior manager and assistant preferred a fitness style but this was clearly inappropriate as the squad is truly stretched over a moderately paced 90-minute game. The two central midfielders are attack-minded but utterly lack creativity and contribute nothing defensively. The wingers are decent dribblers but are otherwise technically deficient. And naturally, as with most squads at this level, there is NO depth (apart from the aforementioned strikers) and little pace.
So --- for now it's off to find some loan signings to band-aid the problems. We have five or six more friendlies; I'll report again after the first regular season game.

Hmmm .... I though it was pronounced "Lewis" (as so memorably enunciated by John Thaw in "Inspector Morse"), but what would a Yorkshireman know about such things ...
I wonder how our American friend would pronounce "Slaithwaite"?
Oh, and what Elrawkum said about the 3 season update rule (have a read of the header please Mr. Gilmore).

As much. if not more, than a Taff... I was guessing, to be honest. You may well be right.
I was watching Chelski v MLS "All-Stars" and the commentator on ESPN kept pronouncing Adidas as "A deee dus".
From where I come from its pronounced "Ad dee das"...but I'm Aussie so our pronunciation could be just as bastardised.
