Seasonal Overview:
Starting 3rd favourites for promotion, Exeter start the season with a 2-2 draw with Aldershot, with 2 penalties scored for Exeter. Next game, a 2-1 win had a penalty scored, and one saved, and one scored by the opposition. The nextgame, a penalty was scored in a 1-0 victory, and the nest2-4 against Chester, was culminated in 2 penalties for Chester and onescored, one missed for Exeter, leading to a grand total of 7 penalties for Exeter and 3 for opposing teams in the first 4 games. Following this, a series of optimistic results lead to Exeter being 5th come Christmas.
In the cups, an FA cup 4th round draw with Moor Green looks promising, a 1-1 draw at home didn't. In the replay, 3-1 down at half time, Exeter were degected. That soon changed, and they won 5-3 in extra time, making up for an earlier 5-1 (!) home loss to Rushden in the Vans Trophy. Drawing Bridlington in the 1st round of the FA cup kept the dream alive. a 2-1 win seemed the icing on the cake. Lancaster were the next to be drawn, and another 2-1 victory seemed beautiful, making up for a recent lapse in performance.
Following Christmas, the league turned downhill. A 4 game losing streak put Exeterdown to 13th in a tightly contested top half of the conferance. In the FA cup, a third round draw at home to Preston North End seemed to confirm this wasn't Exeters time of year. But, after an own goal put Plymouth ahead, and a penalty was missed, in the 88th minute Mr. Striker posing as winger scored, to make it 1-1 and force a replay. At the replay, Exeter went 1-0 down in the first minute. A spirited comeback by Mr. Amazing led to a 5-2 away win against a Championship side. Fourth round draw was away at Torquay. Local rivalryies were bitter down south, and Exeter wanted to win this to bolster their rapidly lowering financial state. At 2-2 with 3 minutes of inhjury time remaining, Mr. Amazing once again struck, making a 3-2 win, and a match against top of the Championship Reading. Unfortunately this didn't go as well as I was distracted by Final Destination on my TV. The match finished 1-3.
During this time, Exeter were lounging around a mid-table position of 11th-9th. The last few games of the season approached with Exeter lying in 11th place. A desperate change was needed, in the form of a more attacking formation and tactics. These instantly worked with two 3-0 victories. a 3-0 loss followed and I was 9th with 4 games left. A 0-0 draw with third place followed, and then a match against the big-boys. Barnet and Hereford were equal in points at the top of the table, 11 points clear of third. I was playing Hereford in what was to be a deciding match for both of us. I took the lead 4 times, until a strike in the 92nd minute robbed me of what would have been a monumental away win. 4-4 was the final score. I remained 9th. My next game was the penultimate match of my season, and a 5-0 thumping of Leigh RMI ensued. My final match, I lay 8th, with same amount of points as7th and 6th, behind only on goal differance. I was to play Dagenham and Redbridge, 7th place, and I needed a 3 goal win, and a draw by Morecambe against already relegated Halifax.
I went 2 up within the first 5 minutes. At half time I remained there, with 6th place Tamworth losing and me up to 6th. In the 75th minute, I went 3 up, and 2 minutes later Halifax took the lead against Morecambe. My dreams had come true! I was in the playoffs! ...But it was not to be. In the 87th minute, Morecambe equalised and, almost on the stroke of full time, They pulled ahead, to clinch a fourth place spot above Stevenage, and eventually gain promotion.
