how good do i have to be to get considered for a job at a higher league club.
I started unemployed, got the Bury job. avoided relegation, more than expected, 2nd season doing pretty well, chance of a playoff finish yet whenever i apply for jobs at clubs in the next league up i get 'application unsuccesful'.
do you have to get promoted before you can get a bigger job?
Its your game. I apparently overreached on an earlier game and got fried by the gods, moving from Conference Nat in my third year to a High profile Scottish Div 1 side. I was advised that it was unrealistic.
If you'll be happy with anything the game engine allows, do it. If you want to walk the straight and narrow of the most zealot-like llamas, don't move up more than one level at a time, and even then, only after some form of success.
Actually, I'm convinced the FM2006 God is a Llama....after I pushed the envelope too far, he made my game crash. I had to start over at Lancaster. Update pending completion of three seasons.
As Bury are in Division two they are not really regarded as LLM. To be LLM you should (or get Frank to) pick a team from the Conference north or south . In terms of moving up to a bigger club well even if you are amazingly successful at your current level I would think a jump of more than one league is extremely unlikely.
P.S. Lower League Managers do not post in the T&T forum asking for good tactic for lower league clubs… Have a read of the header where you will see the rest of the LLM guidelines and see if you are up to giving it a LLM a go.
I'm not certain you should be applying for jobs if you have one, TBH. That's just a personal opinion on one's integrity, nothing to do with FM
What the other pooves said really about FM and taking over Bury, achieving bugger all in a year and a bit and moving up.
And please read the header and decide if this is the place for you. I'll tell you straight up you're either here or you're elsewhere, you can't do both.

How on earth do you ever expect to be promoted IRL? Old Boy's network?

Well, last night, I had Chelsea knocking on my door asking if I wanted the manager's job (2019 and manager of Preston in the Premiership). I looked of the £2.5M/wk wages budget and the £150M transfer budget and rejected them.
