Season 2009/10
Annagh Utd - Northern Irish Premier Division
Expectations are lagging a bit behind as board wanted a saf mid-table position, while the fans wanted a respectable position. I assume the latter is a bit higher. My expectation was to fight for the title, or at least gain a European spot.
The board gave me 20K to work with. Linfield laid 150K on the table for last season's Fans' Player of the Year, which I duely accepted. He scored 21 goals for them as their topscorer. 11 players came in for 7K. Basically just youngsters, but some came to play important roles as injuries mounted. 4 went out the backdoor for 154K.
We entered the European Club Rankings on 374th and drew Ferencvaros in 1st Qual Rnd of the EURO Cup. Lost the first one 3-0, and miraculously won the home-leg 3-0. Then lost on penalties. The England syndrome. As usual we did great in the League Cup with 7 straight wins, but Glenavon beat us in the Semi 2-0.
Never found the great league form of last year, and it was an extremely close fight behind completely superiour Linfield. They won the title with 6 games left and only conceded 11 in 30 matches. With two games to go 3 points separated 2nd and 8th, we were 4th. Anything could happen. I let the kids take a severe beating in the All-Ireland Cup and focused on the league. This luckily paid off. We won the last four games and secured 2nd spot with 3 points and a hefty goaldifference in our favour. Even though Linfield didn't win in the last 6, they won the league with 13 points. We were ready for Europe again.
We did well in the Irish Cup again this year. In an even Semi against Linfield we managed to outsmart them on penalties. Then we convincingly beat Crusaders 1-0 to secure our 2nd Irish Cup win. Fans and board euphoric.
Due to many broken legs and long-time injuries many kids had to play, and did surpringly well, although inconsistant. In particular a DC, ML and ST did very well. Topscorer was a 26yo with 22 goals, a new club record. The cups are actually my bread and butter. Losing about 20K a month, so the extra money from especially All-Ireland Cup is vital. We get 125K plus 85K. This means we have about 400K now, and I feel a lot more secure financially.
Training facilities were finally upgraded in the off-season. It's average now
League: 2nd P30 16-7-7 61-29 (+32) P55
EURO Cup: 1st Qual Round
Irish Cup: Winners
League Cup: Semi Final
All-Ireland Cup: 3rd in Group stage
A good season where many youngsters gained caps at the youth level, one even gained 3 caps for the Jocks. He also went to the World Cup, but without playing so far. Hopefully we'll be more stable next season as the youngsters settle in a bit more.
