Think you may be confusing this with the original Football Manager on the ZX Spectrum, which wasnt written by SI but by Kevin Toms (SI/Sega only bought the name relatively recently).
That was indeed written in basic but although wonderful at the time was nowhere near as complex as the FM we have now- considering that a kit graphic in FM takes up more memory than the entire 48k of the original FM.

ah ye olde football manager, i remember it well with it's stick figures - even that had a 3d match engine
but no, i read this on the Championship Manager Series wiki page:
Quote:
The release of the first version of the game was not an outstanding success, and sales were steady rather than spectacular. Reviews ranged from the encouraging to the dismissive; the original game was written in BASIC, a programming language not well suited to programming high-performance computer games.
.. and i'm sure i've heard it mentioned a few other times.

the first version I bought was CM93, which I assume was released in 93 (or possibly 92?) but a version proceeded that just called 'Championship Manager'.

It was a great game, only had the english leagues and could only buy certain foriegners from teams such as <italy> and <spain>. I had england internationals of Junior Bent and Darren Eadie in my side.
