I just finished a home game with Leeds against Bristol Rovers. With half an hour to go with the scores level at 0-0 i make my usual substitutions and carry on. With the time ticking away and a result needed to keep the pressure on the top 6 i feel it is necessary to resort to drastic tactical changes, so on the 74th minute i operate more direct, with a quicker tempo, a more attacking mentality and move Pablo Piatti upfield. That should help right?...
WRONG!
Not a single sniff of a chance for the remaining 26 minutes, not a shot on target, not a shot off target! Absolutely ridiculous, this has happened many, many times before, but this was the last straw for me and felt i had to come here to vent my frustrations once and for all.
Why does this happen so much? It's completely stupid and although i find this term overused on these forums and very annoying, Unrealistic!!
Im not going to ask how many of you have noticed this issue from time to time, because i KNOW you all have!
Take a hint from Susies website name and sort it out SI!!!
the quick tempo was probably what went wrong, when the players are tired near the end of the match it will be difficult for them to make quick passes and forward runs. Perhaps a slow, measured build up might have been more succesful, even though time was short.
You know what my gripe is? When people don't win a game and straight away claim it's because FM is unrealistic.
There are plenty of real life games that end 0-0 and have barely any chances in them.
And as for this:

That's just a rediculous assumption. I for one haven't seen this. I've rarely had 26 minutes of a game go by without a single highlight and I've never thought to myself 'man more stuff should be happening here because I've made some changes'. What I'd actually realise is that the opposition is obviously playing very defensively, a tactic that I believe has been referred to as 'parking the bus' in real life, and this is the reason I can't create any chances. The fact is I haven't made the right changes to allow me to break them down.
TBH I don't see much of a problem with this. Playing more direct and attacking football doesn't mean you will necessarily get any chances. The opposition can easily find a way of dealing with it and they often do IRL. It is not uncommon for a team to play for that long without getting a chance.
P.S. If you made changes in the 74th minute then that is 16 minutes without a chance not 26.
I'm guessing that Bristol Rovers were camping out in front of their goal throughout the match seeing as on paper, you had the better team? If thats the case then all your doing is hitting the ball into the box thats full of Bristol players who are able to clear the ball.
In this sort of situation, I consider it much better to play short passing, with a quick tempo, and focus passing out to the wide men. Keeping passing short will mean your team keeps control of the ball, whilst playing out wide should stretch the defence, hopefully allowing your wingers to deliver a cross to a striker who is now in more space due to the defence being stretched.
i sort of agree with you. im chelsea (yes) and have line-up of, ochoa(gk), alves(rb)cole(lb)terry&albiol(cb)essien(dm)lampard &kaka(cm)ronaldo(rw)sila(lw) villa(cf) with same winning tactics i used on 07 and score on average of 1 a game. not realistic in my opinion.
Well, I *have* noticed this but there's a perfectly reasonable arrays of reasons why this is happening.
For once, it's obviously easier to defend than to attack. The opposition simply had a time wasting tactic coupled with a very defensive mentality in order to neutralize any possibility of even a shot on goal.
Furthermore, changing the tactic doesn't always mean the actual tactic is going to change, as IRL. You can't really adequately change the entire tactic on the 74th minute.
My point is that when you're desperate for a goal AND you have chances, DON'T alter the tactic significantly, or your players will just get confused at first and then won't have enough time to implent it.
A good way to actually witness that is to watch the match (not the highlights) after the 74th minute. You're gonna see exactly what is wrong.
