You need to have the pen tool selected. Not pencil, not any of the lasso tools...the pen tool. Then add anchor points around the shape you want to cut out. Then see the paths tab and there should be your selection. Right click on it and pick "make selection".

Ohh and hope you know that by pressing the CTRL-button and dragging an anchor point, you can actually move the points without it affecting the rest of the points.
Also just clicking anywhere along the path adds an anchor point. These will help you to avoid using the action history 
Can't remember the other buttons that can be used |

Nice tutorial but i got one q'tion...
on the first step to zoom in and put the dots around the picture...
Well I have tryed but it always seems to colour the picture in as I go along the lines with the Pen tool.
Is there any type of Pen tool i need to use?

Is there any type of Pen tool i need to use? | Yes, it is or was on the first page. When you look at the possible settings select the middle one, not the one it starts on (at the left). The bar is at the top just below the file options etc.
