Thats a great tutorial, I had been using the extract tool to limited success and recently a friend put me on to using the Erase background tool which works well but is VERY time consuming.
But this method is brilliant, thanks !

I can't seem to get it working for myself. I do the dotted line around the render, yet it gives me no option to 'make a selection'...

It's in the "paths". I bet you're looking at "layers".
