Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default 5-3-2 Help Please

Hi Guys

Wonder if anyone out there can help me

I like to play a 5-3-2 Attacking formation & I have a question regarding the 3 centre backs

Does 1 have to be left-footed? & if not supposing one of the main three DCs is left footed even though he is the poorest does he revert to the left sided position?

Thanks for your help

I don't think it matters too much if one of the DC's is left footed
Reason: Since unlike a left back, he eill be cutting inside the right-footed winger, he can dispossess fairly easily if he uses his right foot!

Anyways, I play a 5-3-2 and it works fine with the right footed, left centre back!

Thanx mate but supposing one of the three is left footed would you move him to the left sided position even though he isn't the best

Yes, you can do that!
But I would still prefer my best 3 defenders!

Thing with this formation is that the defenders need to be good in tackling, the outside defenders anyways. So they dont have to go too wide! Thats why is good to use basic defenders.

Make sure the central defender is good in air.

If more questions (about this formation), do ask! Will be back in a few..

Cheers very helpful

one last question I have 2 superb defenders (both right footed) in the squad & quite a few okay as back up so I need to bring a defender in & the one that comes out on top is left footed so do I place him in the middle or to the left even though his tackling isn't as good as my main defenders

Good question, i think!
I would suggest experimenting a bit.

Put him on the outside for now. But if he falters, try and bringing him in the middle!

I don't think it's possible to implement a successful 5-3-2 tactic in this version. I've tried it with Man Utd, Dortmund, and Chelsea with no success, teams which I have won the league with emphatically using a 4-4-2. You would think that it's a defensive formation but it leaks all too many goals. The wing-backs continually watch the ball go over their heads with mouths agape as the opposition winger has an acre of space to attack.

tbh, I have managed to implement a very successful 5-3-2 indeed!
Albeit I am with AFC Wimbledon in 2024, but with the said tactic, I have won premiership with them about 6 times, and CL about 2 times.
I think its a fairly good tactic, and for some reason, its weird, but I find making 4-4-2 much more difficult

But yea, I think this tactic mainly needs a good foundation in full-backs, farrowed upto AM position..hold on:

ST ST ^ AMC ^ | | | MC MC | | | WBL WBR DC DC DC

You do need very good natural full-backs for this!

prince, what is the secret setting for your wingbacks? I assume that you must have quality wide men for this to work considering they are vital to this system of play. I'm talking Roberto Carlos (back in his heyday), and Zanetti good. It's a huge responsibility to play this role in a 5-3-2. I tried playing it once and my liver almost collapsed it was that demanding

Actually, that may have had something to do with the Johnnie Walker Green Label.

Wingbacks are very very important for this tactic. The wingbacks that I use have very good acceleration, pace; fairly decent crossing, although I think that the tactic can be better utilized with good crossing abilities. Creativity helps as well, but not much.

These were my instructions for wing-backs (symmetrical)

Men = 17
CF = 9 (Varied it to about 14, worked fairly well too)
Passing style = 14
CF = 12
Tack = team (hard)
FWR: often
RWB: Often
LS: Rare
TB: Rare
Cross ball: Often

Most important: Cross from was set to Byline. Initially I had used mixed, and deep, but they did not worked well at all! Cross aim could be made to TM, but I kept it at mixed, and with higher CF, it worked well.

Zonal marking.

For some reason, my central defence was always the highly rated personnel in the team. The three starting ones had a combined average of 7.50 over a season.

Unfortunately, I could not fully utilize these players for their attacking capabilities. I mean, I could only get about 12-15 assists from each every season. They were not my corner takers btw. They have always averaged about 7.25, which tbh, is not very good. But is good enough to see your team through.

I mean tbf, this is not the best tactic at all (what I have got), heck its not even close to being very good, but since I built my team around it, it worked very well. I did find Carlos and Zanetti-esque players to play in the positions!
