was wondering if you have defender and striker with same influence would you make defender captain to try to concede less or striker to score more?

i think its down to your own opinion tbh. personally, i prefer to have a defensive player be the captain as he can sit back and watch play and basically shout at everyone!

also if they have the same influence, i tend to look at the little things like team work, determination, composure maybe, decisions etc etc to decide who i want to be the captain

hmmm... nice query stuart. IMO, whoever is the captain regardless of whether he is a defender, midfielder, or striker, doesn't affect the defending or the scoring. That would depend on the mentality set up i think. However, the captain obviously is the one who influences or inspires his teammates in their style of play.

If two team mates have the same influence value, i consider who is the more established player in the team and then his determination. For example, i'm play man utd, G.Neville is default captain. I signed on a free Friedrich and Metzelder who both have 19 in influence. When Neville doesn't play, I put Vidic as my captain having an influence of 15 even though both Friedrich and Metzelder is playing alongside with him because he is a more established player and has higher determination. I look at influence first, but also teamwork, work rate, bravery and determination. High professionalism and ability to handle pressure seems useful too.

In the older days of pre FM which was cm...people use to believe that choosing a defender as a captain would lead to better defensive performances and choosing an attacking midfielder would show more attacking nous...whether this remains the case is not certain. I have a defender who's captain but I don't think there is a correlation thats clear.

What I do know is the choosing a captain is a function of these attributes....

1. Influence
2. Determination
3. Workrate
4. Composure would be good as well

1,2 and 3 are musts

Question, if i may:

So 1,2 and 3 would apply even if it's a newly signed player? His being new to the team irrelevant? I've noticed that when my team for match day doesn't include my default captain, it chooses a player who is well established rather than a newly signed player with higher influence, determination, and workrate values.
