When my team is playing well, the average rating across the board should be 7. Any one on 6 is performing below standard. Any time the rating drops to 5, that player is a liability. One way or the other, if there's a player that'll screw the game for me, it'll be that guy. Sure, he might get involved in a play that brings his rating back up to 6 or even 7 but all it takes is a wild back pass, a poor clearance, etc. and it's good bye 3 points. And usually, it's these players I'm looking out for when i want to bring on a sub.
When my team is being outplayed, naturally, the rating should reflect that. In this case, it should be about 6, 5 if someone is having an awful day.
If ever my defenders rating drop to 5, I'll give them a few seconds and then if it doesn't improve, they're off.
With midfielders, I tend to be a bit more lenient. I usually take into account their pass rate when deciding whether to sub or not.
Strikers are a tough one. Again, passing and shots on goals needs to be taken into account.
Then there's the time to sub. If I'm leading by a goal, subbing is used to waste time so I'll use it late in the game. Otherwise, it always occurs in the second half, after the 50 minute mark.
That's basically how I do it.
