Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

After trying constantly with different tactics I have come up with my own. I originally had two formations which were both Rule of One mentality but after testing Glassy80's tactic Glassy Best QPR 2010 (which was great by the way) I had a sudden break through. I changed my defence mentaily and that only which seemed to have the effect I was looking for.

I have stuck with the only one tactic but tweaked it slightly to suit. The tactic is still a work in progress so please bare with me.

Tactical Overview

It's a basic 4-4-2 shape with the exception of the wingers which are in the AMR/L positions with farrows up to the byline.

The Style of Play

I have set the formation up for the Midfield and the Strikers to be very attacking while the Defence and back line remain deep. I also play very wide with a slow tempo and as the defence is further behind this creates more space for the Midfield to use. I also like using a Target Man (Eddie Johnsen is always a favourite) but I don't want to restrict my wingers to crossing to him only so they are set to cross aim at mixed.

The kind of players you have playing for the team obviously need to be considered and worked around the tactic so some tweaking will be needed. For example lower league teams will need to be more solid at the back so you may consider having your fullbacks on FWR rarely but if you are the likes of Real Madrid you could consider FWR often. So far I have found the tactic to be good Home and Away and never had to tweak it too much.

Player Instructions

Fullbacks - I have FWR set to mixed and RWB set to mixed but set it to your own fullbacks.

Centre Backs - Very Defensive and rarely forward. Only in attacking positions when at set pieces.

Centre Midfield (Defensive) - This is my holding Midfielder who rarely gets forward and breaks up any attack from opposition.

Centre Midfield (Attacking) - This is my creative Midfielder who like to have good passing, creativity, vision and dribbling. I did have him set to FWR but have changed it as I want him just behind the strikers as he seems to join them too easily when FWR are set to often.

Wingers - both Wingers have free roles with slightly more creative freedom than the rest. I also have them to cross from the byline. I have scored many of my goals from the wingers as having free roles and crossing from byline encourages them to go to goal if they have the chance. Depending on the squad I am using it with I may set them back to the MR/L positions.

TM - I want him to hold the ball up so having RWB often also helps him to hold it up for the rest of the team to suport.

ST - This can be the fast striker or the more skillful striker. The more skill the striker has the more likely I will put him in the free role as it doesn't seem to work with some players.

Tweaks

As I have said before a lot depends on the players you have and how much attacking you want to do. If you want to hold onto a lead I personally move the MC(d) to the DM position and leave the other MC in the middle on his own or if I want to go more attacking I will set FWR often to the fullbacks put the MC(a) to the AM position and set the MC(d) to the DM to help cover for the fullbacks.

Track Record

So far I have tested the tactic with Glasgow Celtic, Real Madrid, Helsingborg and Newcastle. I won the treble the first season trying it with Celtic having only been beaten twice and drawn once. I also got to the Champions League semi final but due to injuries had to field a very weak team. I am still mid season with the other teams and am topping the table in all of them so far.

No-one tried it? Would like to hear what people think so I could try improving it.

Well I've decided to start a game with Caley thistle to really see how good I can do with this tactic since the players and money available aint great so it will depend on the tactic.

Tweaks Made
[LIST]

I want the Fullbacks covering at all times as I have slow Centre Backs so RWB and FWR are set to rarely.

The MC(d) is put inot the DM to help out the defence.

I've decided to untick Target Man and tick Counter Attack.

These tweaks should help Lower League teams.

First two games have gone pretty well. Won against Rangers at home 3-1. They had most of the possession but were restricted to shots outside the box. Then beat Aberdeen away 1-0 having slightly more possession and now sitting 2nd in the SPL.
