It's a good idea to have another tactic (you can save it and then switch fairly easily in game) to counter a late surge by the opposition in which they'll try to score, especially if you're but a goal ahead. In this scenario the opposition may switch to a 4-2-4 which is pretty effective if not countered. My version of the counter, or how to shut up shop is quite simple, in that it's a more defensive minded formation, of narrow width, with short and slow passing. Also, time wasting is set to often and I have my defensive line set to deep. This has worked brilliantly for me and as a result I concede very few late goals, often in fact I end up scoring a last minute goal of my own just to put the result beyond doubt.
Ticking counter attack might prove useful too, and will probably see you more likely to finish off the game but as the above has always been so effective for me, I haven't got around to trying that out, not wanting to fix something if it isn't broken 'n' all that.
