Hi Guys,
New to the game and if this is already in the forums I apologise in advance. Anyways I am finding that alot of times late in the game when I am leading and defending well that it says the team has changed to 4-2-4 and invariably 10secs later i'm over run and they score. This is of course frustrating, I have looked in the tactics area and there is no 4-2-4 formation. Could someone explain to me what it is and how to stop it.
Cheers
Lyons
yeh this can be a common problem. i like to be in charge of games and this can sometimes be my downfall. what i would do if i was to defend against this is to:
reduce team mentality and lower defensive line
set forward runs to rarely for DMC and fullbacks
maybe have all 4 defenders marking all 4 strikers
set the fullbacks up the same as the centre backs (flat back 4)
set counter attack on
play wide (not sure about this but as they have no wide midfielders surely it helps when you get the ball to the wide players as there will be nobody on them.
remove farrows from wingers
play more direct and higher tempo and through balls to exploit the extra space and maybe kill off the game by going 2 goals ahead.
other people probably have better ideas but this is what i would do. with the now deeper defensive line i may also increase closing down as there should be less space to exploit for the opposition. make sure your fullbacks are defensive as the opposition will look to get the wide strikers in behind them.
good luck, hope ive been helpful, this is something that really annoys me as it often happens when you've dominated a game but not killed it off, the opponent seems to get a new lease of life by this change.
You can watch your opponents formation and any changes they do in the "formations" meny during a match.
The 4-2-4 is just a standard 442 with the two wingers moved all the way up to the front line.
Can't say I have much problem with it and I don't do any major changes to counteract it. I might put my fullbacks on 'runs forward rarely', take the tempo and with down and do a bit of timewasting late on. It's also useful to make a few late substitutions to disrupt the flow of the game and waste time. And don't be too defensive: always keep attacking options on so they can't relax and attack with all personell. When your opponents go for the rather desperate 424 you should be more likely to score on the counter than the other way around.
What I really hate in situations like this is the manner of the goals I concede, they usually come about just like this:
They take a poor shot and I get a goal kick. My goalkeeper takes it but doesn't get much distance to it. At this time, even though I've set my defensive line on deep, all members of my defence quickly chase the ball upfield like madmen, just for a opponent to head the ball back behind them where four hungry strikers are waiting to beat the offside trap for a clear run at goal.
And like I said, this seem to happen even with the deepest possible back line.

I agree as it happens to me regularly. I play a diamond formation which probably isnt a good formation to stop a 4-2-4 rush unfortunately. Problem for me is I have an exceptional AM in Anderson and a 442 isnt very good for an attacking midfielder.
