I made a lot of test games with FM2006 and medium database AND the retain player option.

It does only unbalance a game if you use it in a non-reasonable way, say retain players from China in a English save.

I have seen no problems with retain players, if you use it just that way:

Only retain all players from the active leagues in your game.

Additional, only retain players from the border countries/leagues.

The more nations you retain the more influence it has on international games, as non-grey national teams will usually play a bit better than just grey ones.

I did not see any kind of unbalance, when you just retain players from the leagues which are active in your saved game.

SI cdid remove hugte database,because it did unblance the game in the long term.
