He is on a long term deal (4 years I think) so does that mean I he will play the next couple years (until I sell him) as an unhappy player?
Is there any side effects to keeping him for a few years in this state? (morale drop for the team, etc...)

In the FM 06, or 07 I had lots of players that turned unhappy after I rejected a bid and not a single one of them changed his "opinion". Maybe in 08 this part of the game changed. I don't think that side effects can happen, but if he is a good player, and his pitch performance are below standards, the press and the fans will start putting pressure on you to drop him out of the team.

offer the unhappy players a new contract, that will take care of it, at least for a while, because their happiness of a new contract dominates.

In older versions I used to loan out a player who was disliked and that used to help the problem as well after the end of that loan spell ( can always recall anyways if you need him)

as far as i'm aware this depends on the change in club rep. if your club start winning leagues then quite often the player stops bleating (had a case with van der daart at HSV) however if the team are stagnant in the mid table then he will persist with his winges and want a move, similarly if the players CA/PA are well above the league standard then he will consistently ask for a transfer. hope this helps.
