The patch...
Once downloaded and put into the game... will it take effect in a previously saved game or do i need to start a new career for the changes to take effect?

if you read the thread about the patch, u'd have known the answer:
Re: Saved game comptability - the "beta" patch is saved game compatible, but, as always, we recommend starting a new game.
