Default Is the rating system unfair on goalkeepers who don't have much to do?

My Milan team has a world class GK at his peak with virtually perfect stats, yet he averages 6.80 or so every season. Just when I think he's doing terribly I take a closer look and see that he has 20 clean sheets in 30 games, and has never conceded more than two, but has NEVER received a higher mark than a 7. I can only imagine that this is because the team is defensively strong enough to stop him from having to make many saves, with most saves that he does make being easy ones. So I guess he's getting 6s because of his long passes that don't reach their target? Is this really a fair way to judge a keeper's performance?

So would you expect a keeper who makes 2 saves in a game (due to the defence being outstanding) getting a rating of say 8?

How can the keeper get a good rating if he need'nt have bothered turning up?

not quite that, but the game seems very happy to drop them down to a 6 for little reason, while giving everyone else who performs solidly a 7. I guess it falls into that classic debate about the scale not really making sense, again.

So again to reiterate, if the keeper does not make a string of crucial saves, why should they get a rating better than average?

Maviarab, one could certainly argue that

Average = conceding 1.5 goals.

Therefore,

Clean sheet = above average?

Certainly I'd want to see 8, 9, and 10 reserved for keepers who performed brilliantly .. but since the game appears to act as though '6' is slightly below average and '7' is slightly above average .. it makes sense to me to put a clean-sheet / two saves performance at '7'.

I have to agree with Amaroq- I would expect a clean sheet in a match my side has played well in to at least receive a 7, but that isn't always the case...

Don't forget that the GK also has a lot to do with a clean sheet. He's doing a lot of organising and helping the defenders with positioning etc etc. A clean sheet, even if the GK doesn't make any saves has a lot to do with the GK.
