If you play a Large database with England, Italy, Spain, and Germany active, the crop of "best" players will be too large for you to monopolize, so there will always be a couple of other good teams in your league, plus of course, in the Champions League.
I think this kind of issue is really the key point. Unless you're undeniably head and shoulders above everyone (if you put Man Utd in the Conference then they're probably not going to lose without tremendous bad luck or incompetence), then even the slightest of turns of bad luck can find you on the end of a right gubbing to an inferior team who nevertheless have some players of a similar quality to yours. Interestingly, in my game where I've only loaded Scotland, England and Italy, the game seems to have compensated for the lack of spread of quality players by just stuffing them into those countries. England and Italy now have about four teams worth of players who'd be first choice internationals at the beginning of the game.

They should have the motivation to finish that rare unbeaten season, not lose motivation because they've won the title!"
Me with FM06 i beleive... I haven't been quite as consistent with 7 or 8 yet, but i found that once the league was won, players switch off totally... Mainly because the game doesn't recognise an unbeaten league campaign as special...

Yeah sadly that is the only way I could see anyone going unbeaten in 07 and or 08.

yeah, I had the same problem with 06. After months of easing to wins over everyone my team kindly spends the last few weeks giving relegation certainties a glimmer of hope, rather than aiming for the record unbeaten run/new highest points record/etc. that's the tiniest smidgen of effort away.

Excellent, thanks - sorry I couldn't find it to link to, I did try search!

I was wondering - not to go off topic, but it certainly fits by the OP's "subject" -

With that experience, was it the first team that let you down?

And if so, would the fringe players have been more motivated at having the chance to prove themselves?

The longest I managed is like 10-15 wins in a row, without save loading (with arsenal).

However it is very hard as probably your player just got an "off" day or their goalkeeper is having the game of his lifetime.

It was usually a mix. At the time, i always liked to have two teams, the second almost as good as the first, so towards the end of the season with cup finals coming up i'd mix and match a fair bit...

But then, the "second" team would crush similar oposition prior to the league being won, so it wasn't really a matter of hunger or quality, more a "**** it, we've won the league, why bother" attitude.

Just needs to be stated for clarity:

There's no such things as super keepers.
4-2-4 is only effective if you don't know what you're doing.
