IMO the morale bug isn't as much of a problem on beta 1 than beta 2, which is why I think this is the best option.
trouncing teams for fun? to me that sounds like a match engine problem.
people want the match engine to be realistic but then others happily revel in the problems. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Yes, I got a bit carried away there. When I said 'trouncing teams for fun', I meant that I just beat Darlington 4-0 which for me is quite a good result. In fact I've struggled to beat lower league opposition in the cup and have lost/drawn a few. Arguably it's a little too easy to score on the beta, but it's nowhere near as unrealistic as games on the full patch, at least now my players who are at least good enough to play in league 1 are actually doing well in league 2.

it is very difficult with the patch. but once you get the hang of the tactics it does make sense.
i just beat aston villa 7-1 after deciding not to treat torres with kid gloves. i kept telling him i had faith in him and he wasn't scoring. so i told him i expect a performacne at the start of the game.
he got 2 goals and an assist and my whole team performed better with him doing well.

I understand everyone saying change the tactics etc but none of the top teams do it, I watch Oldham every week and they dont do it.

Tactics change constantly IRL, FORMATION may not change but TACTICS do. Try applying some tactics, it sounds like you are choosing a formation and expecting to win. Football doesn't work like that.

"I watch Oldham every week and they dont do it."

...and that's probably why Oldham are where they are these days!!

At what point though do we start realising THIS IS A GAME. Its meant to be fun. It is possible that perceived realness is overtaking the actual fun element of the footy man series.

My general approach is to change my tactics to take advantage of the opposition's weakness or lessen the impact of their strengths. I changed tempo, players, attacking mentality, formations, style of passing, target men instructions, nothing made any difference on 8.0.1. I go back to the beta patch, apply the same approach with minor tweaks (i.e. near post corners now work) and my players can score. There are fewer chances in games as I would expect in lower league football but Adam Rooney who is good enough to play in the championship now scores regularly and my striker with finishing 13, composure 16 off the ball 13, pace 15, first touch 11 etc. is now the goal poacher he should be.

Yes it's a game, but it's also meant to be a simulation. Demand for realism in the FM series also means that the game becomes more difficult.

It's also why the forums are littered with posts complaining about the lack of realism due to bugs, data issues, etc...

Also, football itself is meant to be only a game, but realistically for many, it's always been far more than a game, right?

Exactly, it's a game. Maybe I don't want to be a real life manager. I really don't want to be changing tactics every game to counter this and that, I can't be bothered, why should I spend so much time doing these things?? All I want to do is pick a team and watch that team play a match. Why can't I have an option saying Assistant Manager takes control of tactics during matches? That would make the game much more enjoyable in my opinion.

I've stopped playing aswell, I played to 2020 and did not win a cup or a league. Stupid stuff just happened like beating my challenger for 1st place in the league 2-1 in a thrilling match and then losing 6-1 to the bottom placed team the next game. I was Inter at the time. I also lost 4 cup finals by more than 3 goals even though the form leading up to them was brilliant. The whole one on one and shots to goal ratio needs to be sorted before I try this game again.
