I'm venturing from facepacks to logos and backgrounds at the moment (don't worry - facepacks will be coming back soon). But I'm having trouble with what I'm sure is a relatively simple part of photoshops, so I'm calling for your help at the moment.
What I've done first of all is saved a picture of a logo as a .gif image and opened that image in Photoshop. Here's a screenie:
Right, what I'm stuck on is how to make the background transparent!!! I'm tearing my hair out and I'm sure it's quite easy! OK, here's some instructions I found from Enzoli:
Quote:
-- We want to set up the logo for 'treatment'
1. Open the image of your logo with Photoshop.
2. Make sure you're working in rgb mode. Go to --> Image/mode/rgb mode.
3. At this point, I like to have a bright green color in background so that I see the transparency better. Just choose the "green bg" and hit play.
5. Now you want to erase any white background or else on the logo. Anything not part of it.
Select the lasso tool. choose a tolerance '30' in the tool bar. now click on the parts you want to erase and you should normally see it selected.
Be carefull not to erase good parts!!
OK, so I manage to get it into rgb mode, but then I can't even set the background to green!! (Although I'm aware it's not essential to do this). I don't know how to set the tolerance to 30 and I don't know how to erase the unwanted white background bits. Is anyone able to help a numpty (me) to remove the background from the logo, so the background's transparent?
Pretty please?

Once you have set the mode to rgb the name of the layer in the layers panel bottom right of your screen will change name - if it is named layer 0 (or layer 1) then you are fine, if it becomes called background, then you need to right click on the layer in the layers panel and select unlayer from background.
Once you have done that select the wand tool (it's easier than the laso tool generaly the laso tool is best for bits the wand doesn't remove correctly).
To set the tolerance, there will be a box where the feather box is in the your screenshot (top left of the screen), adjust this value - a value of 1 will only select pixels of the same colour, value of 10 will select pixels of a close colour etc...
Generaly 1, 10 and 30 are the values I use depending on how clean the image is.
Select the white bits of the image you want to get rid of and then press DEL to delete the selected background.
A green background is handy to see which parts of the white background you have missed. To get a green background select the rectangle shape, on the top toolbar change its colour to green (or any other contrasting colour) then draw the rectangle so it covers the whole image.
Next you'll need to drop the layer so it is underneath the logo, you can either drag the shape layer from the layers panel so it is below the logo layer, or select the shape layer in the layers panel and press Ctrl+[ to drop the layer below the image.
Then carry on removing the white until you are happy with the image.
One thing you can do if the logo has a solid border is to add a stroke to the logo to remove the faint white border that can be hard to get rid of - to apply a stroke right click on the layer in the layers panel go to blending options -> stoke -> then select inside and size 1 pixel. You'll also need to give it the same colour as the border you want it to have. (To find your border colour select the eye dropper tool or press I then click on the border and you'll notice the colour palette change to match that colour, then copy the RGB values for the stroke).
Now you've hopefully cleaned up the image and removed the background, hide the green rectangle by clicking the eye in the layers panel to hide that layer. If you have added a stroke to the image, right click on the layers panel and select merge layers after you have hidden the other layer, this will save the stroke into the image.
Finally you need to save the image, use the save for web option and pick png-24.

I'd actually quite like to get into logos, and now I feel I can thanks to you guys.
In the meantime, here's my first effort - a collored grass style background:
wow that looks amazing, hope you make some more, looks really cool, (man city one wink wink). </BLOCKQUOTE>
They've already been made - check out this thread over on Susie where el_crys created these excellent designs. Man City one has already been made - check out the first post and go through the rest of the thread. I really like them which is why I wanted to carry on creating them. Also in this forum the_colonel has done some for international teams.
