This ability thing doesnt make any sanse to me. I noe how it works so do not try to explain it!!! IRE players ability is how good he is on the pitch/how good his attributes are. Very simple. OK I know it is simple to set ability and potential to Shevcenko or Cristiano but just cannot understand how you do it for some young player that nobody heard of (but might be new Fabregas).
I start to think about it when I realised that Andrey Arshavin (with Keryhakov best Russian player) is 1 of the best players (on his position)in the game. I filtered out his attributes (drib, finish, first touch, long sh, pass, tech, anticip, creat, flair, off the ball, pace, acc, agility ) and realised that there are just 2 players who match him!!! Eto'o and smbdy else, forgot who. Then I signed him on free transfer (nobody alse intersted !!??!). Then I went to see him on editor. Ability 144, potential 150. Cannot believe it!!
What is the point of ability and potential than. There is no magician in the world who could say how good player will become!!!
I suggest next: there should be no ability and potential. Players ability should be his attributes, players potential should determine his mental attributes ( ambition, determination, profesionalism...). Reputation should stay as it is. There could be "Zidane" playing in Iraq but becouse of war situation no scout is able to see him. It means that his ability is of world class player but he is unlucky that nobody heard of him.
Example:
player: Mikula Kolinić, 19 years old striker, Hajduk Split (Croatia)
attributes: lets say he is quite skilfull player for his age (just work rate and stamina arent his strong point)
reputation: national
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Person who saw Kolinić would say he is next Alen Bokšić. And he might be. And then you talk to his trainer and you find out that he is a great talent but just doesnt like to train much. Smokes 2 packs of marlboro a day. He is a real party boy, all girls (really beatifull) in Split just adore him. He misses half of his morning trainings. But a brilliant talent.
Trainer knows that he must play him couse otherwise there will be just some 300 ultras in the stands. (80% of people in the stadioum are girls of course). Club just cannot afford that sort of things couse it wont be able to pay elctricity bill.......
How good Kolinić will be??? Hmmm....hard to say......he might change!!!
Thing is quite simple. Why are there mental attributtes. For example if smbdy has poor determination..... just cannot become good player only if he was really a talent (attributes).
OK you answer me who can tell that some player will become good. You can only tell how good he is at the moment. And how good or bad he wants/is able to become......mental attributes.
a player has it attributes that determines how good hi is (ability). if he plays regulary he should improve,no matter if he has poor mental attributes but not as much as he could. If a player plays in first national league (plays regulary against stronger teams) he would improve much more than in third league. also coaches play important role in players development, but that cant help him if he doesnt play enough.

I think that palyer could improve physical attributes even when not playing. Definitly strenght, stamina...(as he grows) , pace and acc not so much. But mental and techniqual should improve/decline as he plays/doesnt play. That is absolutly main factor for player to improve. Of corse when player comes to play for a club in some good league from some other (from Croatia to England for example) he should improve much if he adopts well to new football style......and we come again to mental attributes.....

But if he has poor determination may find one of the staff a catalyst and improve under his guidance or a team mate.
I think this is a compromise that the SI had to do to manage to release this simulator at some date. And there is another issue that i think arises: it would even complicated to play knowing all the aspects of the game; and already there are voices that says FM 2007 is harder to play - which means a smaller market.
I don't understand the problem.
Ofcourse there are going to be some inconsistencies but on the whole the atribute system is fine.
A player has a potential level (I'm sure I wouldn't be Buffon if I trained 24/7) & his ability to reach that level is determined on his attitude (does he train? how hard) & the enviorment (faclities, staf ect.).
also, it is obvious to me that some players may have better stats that other in most areas but a simple stat may hinder them at specific positions (i.e if you can't tackle don't play DC)
