What is the weirdest tactic you used in a serious match i.e. where you actually wanted to win. I haven't actually done any weird ones but i would like to know if they worked. Has anyone ever tried 4 sweepers with two in the centre and 1 on left and right - like a normal back four but deeper.

I used to use 3-2-2-2-1 all the time on FM2005.

Absolutely dominated the league for years, haven't tried it since.

During a CL match where I got destroyed 5-0 by Man U first half, I switched to a 5-3-2, using a sweeper, 4 man marking defenders (all set to CB), 2 defensive midfielders supporting an attack-minded midfield playmaker and two out-and-out strikers, I managed to come back to 5-4. Everything was set to defend, to stop Man U from tearing me apart again, but we got 4 goals on the counter.
That's the most adventurous (defensive? boring?) I get.

As Brazil manager and then managing in the Brazilian league I used this set up:
DR DC DC DL

(or with a AMR going to striker)
And I managed to win everything in site!

That came out screwed up, it was a back four with the full backs pushing up one stage, a central defensive midfielder, 3 central attacking midfielders with the most central one pushing pack one stage, one central striker and an attacking midfielder on the left (or right) pushing up the join the striker.

With 8 players on the injury list and no fit strikers, I only had 12 fit players for a vital CL quarterfinal against PSV. Because of lack of players in certain positions I had to change to a 3-3-2-1-1 with everything on full defense. And I mean everything.
We won 8-0.
